@craigthom I love astronaut ice cream. It’s been a favorite of mine for 30 years. They even have ice cream sandwiches now! If anybody could give a review of those, I’d love to hear it.
@rprebel@craigthom Yes, I seem to be in the minority of people who like “astronaut” ice cream (not actually eaten in space by astronauts because the amount of crumbs/dust it produces can become a big problem in orbit). I don’t buy it often because it tends to be expensive, but I like it.
@rprebel I’ve had that, so here’s your mediocre review.
Messy as hell. The icecream part tends to fall off the chocolate biscuit. They’re usually broken in the package. The chocolate part reminds me of those low calorie Oreo cookie packs. Lacking in chocolate flavor. Very crispy though, which I enjoyed. The icecream has even less flavor than the Neapolitan icecream pack. Same crunchy texture.
@craigthom yes, i chose ‘yes i’m not sure why’ because ‘yes, it’s a novelty item’ wasn’t an option. i was given astronaut ice cream as a kid and i actually like it. also, i happen to have an astronaut ice cream sandwich in the bottom drawer of my dresser right now. i’m building my version of a loot crate (jerk box) for my partner and this month’s theme is space.
@thismyusername Hands down better than Wise. Better packaging, better QC, better flavour. And most MH foods are “just add hot water” prep, where most Wise requires cooking.
@cengland0 Watch for sales. Mountain House and I think Wise both have 40% or more off sales a couple of times a year, and Amazon just had coupon sales on some random #10 cans that brought a few down to almost 72% off.
Also if you ever wander the clearance aisles at wally world, I’ve seen the pouches there a few times at half off.
MRE Depot and the like also have periodic sales, including some big ones for black friday/cyber monday if you want to stash a few MREs or similar component items. If nothing else they’ll make you glad to get back to regular food
Its a good feeling to have an emergency supply tucked away just in case.
Hey, Meh-inators. This reminds me that I would probably buy some freeze-dried food if you sold some for a decent price. I live in the earthquake-prone land of Seattle, and I always worry that I don’t have enough snackage laid away for the Inevitable. So… please get on that!
Yes, I have quite a lot of freeze dried fruit, mostly from Brothers All Natural. No added sugar, no salt, no preservatives, just fruit, conveniently packaged. The mangoes and strawberries are awesome. Hmmm, no mangoes on the site, must be seasonal. https://www.brothersallnatural.com/strawberry-freeze-dried-fruit-crisps/
I’m going to Washington DC later this week, and one thing on my agenda is to hit up the Air and Space Museum. Mostly because I want to see the freshly restored USS Enterprise NCC-1701 Model, and because I want some Astronaut Ice Cream.
@sanspoint Huh, I was completely unaware of the Enterprise in there, neat. Walk past Air & Space nearly every day but haven’t been in there in over ten years probably.
@RiotDemon that is really weird- i never knew that and never go there except i have occasion to go this week to pick up some watercolor supplies as a gift that were 3x as expensive on amazon.
@jerk_nugget my store has them hanging on a side cap halfway down the main aisle when you walk in. There’s usually a sampling of about 6-10 different astronaut food choices.
Make sure you get a coupon from the website when you go!
Much like insurance…you don’t really need it, until you need it. I’m prepared…not in the “prepper” sense, but I’ve got food, water & ammunition in case of emergency
@smilingjack We keep several cases of bottled water. Oldest case comes in for general use, and a new one is popped into the queue. Plus, if time allows and we have warning, a Water BOB bathtub water bladder. Fill it from the bathtub tap with trustworthy water and you can have 60-90 gallons of usable water. Even if you get a boil order or less than clean water, it can still flush be used to flush toilets.
And a campstove, and the propane grill out back, so we’d be able to boil the water.
I have a jar of freeze-dried coffee, but it doesn’t taste very good.
I had some astronaut ice cream, but I ate it.

@RiotDemon Mint chocolate chip might be the best flavor, but that’s also one of my favorites anyway.
@RiotDemon
Astronaut ice cream reminds me of those little marshmallows in Lucky Charms (before you add the milf).
@ruouttaurmind I kind of agree, but I skip the milf in mine, lol.
/giphy milf
@RiotDemon Gaaaaaa! Milk! Before you add the MILK! (Oh how embarrassing )

@ruouttaurmind “Go on.”
SHOUT OUT TO MOUNTAIN HOUSE
@thismyusername My wife has spoken fondly many times about eating Mountain House on backpacking trips when she was growing up.
@thismyusername Hands down better than Wise. Better packaging, better QC, better flavour. And most MH foods are “just add hot water” prep, where most Wise requires cooking.
What about the “No, I’d like to but it’s usually too expensive” option?

Earthquake kit
@AnnaB Ditto. Storm/tornado/quake. AKA the stay at home and not a fema tent kit.
Coffee? That freeze-dried ice cream stuff is good at 5AM when it doesn’t taste like wallboard.
Then there is this basement filler
@droopus it’s like a blue apron box for the zombie apocalypse!
@djslack The official name is the “Feed 500 of your closest friends during the next hurricane” kit

Ive got 2 weeks worth for the disaster kit.
I must be blind, because I couldn’t find the button for “yes, I live in a place where Astronaut Ice Cream is easy to find.”
I’m going to Washington DC later this week, and one thing on my agenda is to hit up the Air and Space Museum. Mostly because I want to see the freshly restored USS Enterprise NCC-1701 Model, and because I want some Astronaut Ice Cream.
@sanspoint if you have a Michael’s craft store close by, they tend to carry the icecreams year round.
@sanspoint Huh, I was completely unaware of the Enterprise in there, neat. Walk past Air & Space nearly every day but haven’t been in there in over ten years probably.

@RiotDemon thank you!
@brhfl Yup! They just did a complete restoration, and now it looks like it did when it was used for shooting TOS! https://airandspace.si.edu/stories/editorial/enterprise-studio-model-back-display
It’s weird, just yesterday I was inundated with advertising for an expensive freeze dryer in my Facebook feed. Is that foreshadowing?
Much like insurance…you don’t really need it, until you need it. I’m prepared…not in the “prepper” sense, but I’ve got food, water & ammunition in case of emergency
@tohar1 Sheep, not one paracord bracelet, no camo, and where is the rest of the cnbc suit. MZBs eat these sheep for lunch.
Doesn’t it need water to eat? Isn’t water going to be one of the hardest things to find if you need freeze-dried food?
@smilingjack but on the other hand if you’re anal enough to store freeze dried food, you’ve got an IBC tote in the basement.
