The whole 8x8 thing is based on an outdated recommendation that didn’t account for water ingested as part of food and water-based drinks. Last I checked, the latest science basically says to drink water when you’re thirsty and up your intake appropriately for variables like physical activities and changes in locale.

@RiotDemon Yeah, the ounce per half pound body weight is pretty commonly tossed around in the weight lifting community, especially if they use creatine or other supplements that might benefit from higher than normal water availability.
But for the average person, the most recent data I’ve seen suggests that both methods result in more than your body needs since most people get more water from food and other beverages than they think. And there’s no discernible/significant benefit from drinking more water than your body needs unless you count reminders to get up from your desk more often.
As a 6’2, ~180lb guy, I’ve been drinking around 30oz of pure water a day for years, and I’ve yet to see any negative consequences or tell the difference from when I used to try to hit 90oz/day (other than less peeing). I obviously adjust up during hikes, workouts, sports, and other intense activities.
I personally just think doctors and others give higher numbers since 1) there’s no realistic chance of having negative consequences for drinking more than you need and 2) people rarely actually do the full recommended amounts for stuff like that.
I usually have a Bubba bottle with me and drink water all day at work. I don’t follow the recommended amounts. I drink so I’m not thirsty. Sometimes that means a lot more than the recommended, sometimes it’s less.
I keep a liter of water in my fridge at all times so I can pour it into another water bottle and have cold water all day long. I usually drink about three liters of just water, and then some other beverages besides.

I forgot my cup and there weren’t any clean cups at work, so I didn’t drink anything all day. I’m trying to make up for that now. Water is pretty much the only thing I drink, but I’m bad about remembering to get up and get some.

@Kabn I just read a recommendation that says to take your weight in pounds, and divide by half and drink that many ounces.
So a 180lb person needs 90oz and a 300lb person would need 150oz. A gallon is 128oz.
8 cups would only be half a gallon. That seems way too little.

not water by itself, no, but with plenty of artifical flavors and corn syrup
