@hchavers eh, for hydration, medically speaking? It probably depends upon the bean. Any variety with caffeine is almost always a net dehydrator, though.
As a chemical, caffeine increases production of urine, which means caffeine is a diuretic. But most research suggests that the fluid in caffeinated drinks balances the diuretic effect of typical caffeine levels. High doses of caffeine taken all at once may increase the amount of urine the body makes. This is more likely if you aren’t used to caffeine.
I have a bottle of water in all the main place I sit @home & work. That way I always within reach of a bottle of water. I just sipp a little here & a little there. Now I have got used to drinking it at room temp, so now if I go out I will ask for a cup of water with NO ICE.
@duodec@mycya4me Dietary and metabolic calories are measured in thousands, water thermal calories not so much. One liter of water at 1C will cause the body to “burn” about 37 dietary calories bringing it up to body temp.
@mycya4me@werehatrack Doing 30 minutes on our exercise bike on a middle program at about 2/3rds max resistance reportedly burns about 300 calories if you trust the machine. Drinking a liter of ice cold water afterwards adds a bit more than 10% to that? I’ll take the freebie; it adds up.
The people who make me shake my head are the ones who come out of the fitness joint and make a beeline for the smoothie place next door, emerging with a sugar-laden atrocity that carries double the calories they just burned off.
We used the individual flavor mixes, like Crush or True Lemon, and added one to up to 50 ounces of water. The flavor remains strong and isn’t too watered down. I definitely prefer my water ice cold.
We were advised to drink half of our body weight in ounces of water.
I have always drank a lot of water ever since my high school track/cross-country days. After becoming type 2 diabetic, it is even more so.
I did a test about a year ago, and bought a bunch of bottled water for a weekend. I ended up averaging about 6 liters a day. (Experts encourage people to get at least 2 liters a day.)
@haydesigner
I’ve been told that you can actually die from drinking too much water, it’s called Water toxicity and this is an article I just now googled.
The article or an actual water toxicity death…?
Wow! I’ve seen people severely overloaded with fluid due to chf. But I’ve never really seen anyone come into my ER water toxic. How did you end up treating that, or were you involved in that process? How did they present?
@chienfou@haydesigner@Lynnerizer A toxicity death.
It was a LONG time ago.
I am an RT so we intubated them, had them on a vent. They were put on dialysis. I know they had a horrid electrolyte imbalance and we had trouble getting their sodium up. If I’m not mistaken, they gave them hypertonic saline?
They had severe cardiac arrhythmias and I remember doing their EKG (back when we did them). I had never seen an EKG like that
I don’t remember much more about it. Like I said, it was a long time ago.
Presented unconscious. That’s all I remember because once we got there we went to work intubating, etc. Wish I could remember more.
it was very interesting.
@chienfou@haydesigner@Lynnerizer@Tadlem43 If they ingest enough, it screws up so much of the body chemistry that lots of things all go wrong at once, and trying to counteract it is next to impossible. I had the “pleasure” of listening to an ER nurse go into considerable detail about losing that battle.
Generally buy the little packets of peach tea or lemonade made by Wylers. They are designed to go in a 1/2 liter bottle, but I generally will use one in a 1/2 gallon container (so about 25% strength). I find I will drink much more liquid if it has some flavor. I go thru over a bottle in an afternoon if I am working outside, otherwise about a bottle a day. Usually have one set up at work for my work week as well.
Oh, and yes… it has to be cold/have ice in it.
I’ve read that people (such as royalty and publicly notable religious persons) who can kinda be on public ceremonial duty all day do limit what they drink before and during, and then gulp it down when the day is done.
@f00l@heartny When I am running a booth at a convention solo, I can control my fluid intake closely enough to go for 10 to 11 hours without a pit stop - and as soon as the crowd is out the doors and I have the till secured, the RUN FOR THE STALL siren goes off. It’s a thing.
@Kyeh
Right now I’m in the same boat as you @Tadlem43, I’m limited to 1 liter of fluid a day.
I can’t think of anything I like to drink that ISN’T icey cold! I love ice cold water but it doesn’t seem to like me. It comes right back up quicker than it went down! Crystal Light lemonade is my go to.
I’ve always been told that anything carbonated isn’t hydrating. 🫧
@Kyeh@Lynnerizer@Tadlem43 Yeah, i have a hard time drinking enough plain water, too, even when ice-cold (altho, i agree, that’s a necessity when it comes to water). Ever since the unacceptable Fresca shortage over the past few years (my favorite beverage), i had to find something else to drink, so i settled on my own version of a Crystal Light Arnold Palmer: equal parts Sweet Tea flavor & Lemonade flavor. It’s much better-tasting & more refreshing than just the plain tea flavor.
Tried airup? I think I have the right url. Since we mostly taste through smell it makes sense that releasing a sent while you drink would work. https://intl.air-up.com/
Personally I like water so. Just drink that. But I know that doesn’t work for everyone
@Kyeh@Tadlem43 oh good lord their website reads like an actualy YouTube scam I should have clicked on it first. They need a better web designer. Regardless it’s supposed to work. Not sure how cost effective since the well water is free. I don’t pay for water at any level usually
@Kyeh@unksol I’ve never tried it. I had thought about getting a soda stream, but that seems awfully expensive until I can try it and see if I like it.
Thanks for the link. I’ll check it out!
Actually, that’s kind of a good idea. hhmm…
@Kyeh@Tadlem43 you can get larger tanks and adapters if you want the fizzy water without the sodastream tax on their tiny canisters. And get the tank filled locally. Won’t look quiet as clean on your counter but if you like it/use it you could just drill a hole and mount below
@Kyeh@unksol I’m more into functionality that looks. lol
I’m redoing my kitchen and every person I’ve had in here keeps asking me designing questions that I can’t answer.
If I need a drawer, then just give me a drawer. YOU figure out what kind of drawer that should be…that’s YOUR job. I just want a functional drawer. lol
Drives them nuts! I need help…sigh…
@Kyeh@Tadlem43 well… The hardware options on a drawer can vary a lot and cost a lot when you are doing a whole kitchen. There’s a large cost difference between wood on wood rails and soft close/self close ball bearing sliders. And I’m sure other features.
What size drawer you want where. How will you use it. Technically it’s all functional… How it looks… Yea I would need someone to help there
@Kyeh@unksol Right?? At least give me some options, ask me some questions about what I’m going to do with the drawer, etc., and point me in the right direction. I am totally design illiterate.
But some of these folks are just nuts. I had one walk out because I wouldn’t paint my kitchen cabinets gray, and another because I said I wanted sand colored tile on the floor, though the interpretation of ‘sand’ was wide open.
I even had one guy that wouldn’t walk into my house to give me an estimate until I took down my American flag from my porch…which will never happen.
But I digress… on-the-cabinet tank would be fine, as long as it works. lol
@Tadlem43@unksol Gray kitchen cabinets, ugh! I kind of hate the current decorating trends - everything blocky and hard-edged and gray or some other really dark color. Do you have Lowes or Home Despot nearby, where you could just walk around and see if there’s anything you like?
Grey shades have taken over the “unremarkable aesthetic that’s supposed to represent design and good taste” to the point that it’s just another instagram cliche gone dead.
I like gray/grey. But i like it less when it’s the “only proffered choice”
@f00l@Kyeh@unksol Yes, I’ve been to both stores…and then some…and have spent forever on Pintrest, etc.
It’s a really small kitchen, and I think I’m going to paint the cabinets a cream color, have a sandy colored tile floor, and I haven’t quite decided yet on the countertops, but something light. The walls I’d like to be a little darker for contrast, maybe a medium bluish/gray. I want it to be lighter in color so that it will kind of open it up and make it look larger, but I don’t want it monotone.
I think that would be neutral enough to be able to decorate around it, and easy for the next owners to enjoy/change without it being cost prohibitive for them…or me.
I don’t know…what do you think? Like I said, I’m design illiterate!
Gray is ok, but it’s been WAY over-done and now it’s just default. I’d like there to be some thought behind it, not just whatever the trend is today.
I’l gladly take any suggestions!
@f00l@Kyeh@Tadlem43@unksol
As the guy that custom built our kitchen I can tell you having an idea of what you intend to use the drawers for is a critical detail.
These drawers are different heights for different purposes. The top one has silverware
the second one has small utensils like peelers etc
third one has rolls of aluminum foil wax paper etc
fourth one has storage plastic containers AKA Tupperware typestyle stuff,
bottom one has kitchen towels
@f00l@Kyeh@Tadlem43@unksol
The drawer with the cans on it is actually split in half and each half is elevated at the back so that as you pull a can the next can rolls forward. The spice cabinet is a vertical drawer with drawers inside it for all the different spices, the cabinet under the range top has space for pans, pots etc in different drawers. I hate trying to pull stuff out of cabinets, so all my cabinets have pull-out shelves / drawers.
The corner cabinet is our coffee station. And the wet bar is obviously a wet bar
@chienfou@f00l@Kyeh@unksol wow! That is so awesome!! I love that corner cabinet!
I have a small pantry in the kitchen, and I’m going to turn my hall closet into a pantry, as well, and keep not only extra canned goods, etc. but also paper products, et al in it.
I love your kitchen! It’s so efficient …and fun! Thanks for sharing the pics! It gives me some ideas.
@f00l@Tadlem43@unksol @chienfou That is GORGEOUS and so well-thought-out and I’m SO envious! I really love the wine box drawer faces, and the fluted glass cabinet doors. If you get bored after retiring from the ER you could probably do custom cabinetry.
@f00l
Thanks. Having the correct tools and a willingness to try help a lot. I did a bunch of research and reading as well. Those are all about 20 years old now…
@chienfou@f00l@Kyeh@Tadlem43 Very nice. I would definitely need the direction of “I want this here and that there” before even attempting to modify the existing cabinets let alone something that well done.
Because of the way the previous owners designed the kitchen and the fact that I’m 6’4" a lot of the pantry ingredients happen to be out of reach of many people at the moment.
@cinoclav Oh NOO!! I’m so sorry. I have chronic kidney stones and they hurt!
When I was first starting out in the hospital, I had a guy that was passing a kidney stone that was literally on the floor begging for his mother. I laughed at him.
After I had my first one, I felt so ashamed. i wish I had gone and gotten her name and number and called her for him. lol
My punishment is the scores of stones I’ve had since then.
I hope it passes soon and without incident. Drink LOTS of fluids and walk. It will help them pass.
I wish you the very best.
I’ll be glad to call your mom for you… I will… I promise.
@Tadlem43 Thank you. I’ve had uric acid stones before from gout and they weren’t that awful. But the 5 mm calcium stone stuck in the ureter is a whole other level of pain. I’ve heard from several women that it was way worse than giving birth. I’ve been drinking plenty and I’m on my feet most of the day since I work in healthcare. Fortunately I haven’t had any pain in about 10 days so I’m hoping it’s moved on and I just didn’t know it. At least it’s not currently obstructing. I’m awaiting scripts for an ultrasound and another kub so I’ll find out for sure soon enough what the status is.
Just to note, I’m adding lemon to my water and started using Chanca Piedra to help prevent any further stones. You may want to look into it. I wish you no more stones in your future!
@cinoclav I’m glad you aren’t hurting now. Yeah… mine are calcium oxalate and are barbed…and painful. I’ve tried most everything, but for some reason, I just seem to grow them. I haven’t heard of Chanca Piedra. I’ll look into it. Thanks!
Sometimes I pass them and don’t know it…sometimes I’m not so lucky, but so far, I’ve not had to have any surgery, though I’ve been close several times.
Hope your exams come out good and you’ve already passed it!
@cinoclav@Tadlem43
Never had the “pleasure” of having to deal with stones. Have dealt with lots of patients with them though. I always tell them that what they’re trying to pee out is like trying to pee out a sandspur. And yes I have heard from women that it’s worse than childbirth. That’s why women have kids. If men had to endure childbirth they would only have one and give up. Women are willing to do that more than once and endure the pain.
@chienfou@cinoclav And I hope beyond hope that you never, ever do!!
Go on youtube and watch the videos of men who are hooked up to this machine that simulates period cramps. lol (I have to much time on my hands lol )
@chienfou@cinoclav@Tadlem43@werehatrack My sympathies to all with the kidney stones. I found them around a tie with shingles (5 nerve roots, pain for 6 mo, got lucky it wasn’t for life although some of the other symptoms are). Mine are the calcium kind. Have one currently sitting mid kidney not causing any problems (2mm) and I hope it stays just like that the rest of my life. It’s being inadvertently tracked due to CT scans I keep having to get for cancer crap. I sort of wish I didn’t know it was there. Gives me something not to look forward to.
I haven’t died of dehydration, so the answer is yes.
Yes.
@yakkoTDI Ahh, man of mystery… color me intrigued.
When I get thirsty, I drink water.
Does dark water filtered through beans count?
@hchavers Yes it does.
@hchavers eh, for hydration, medically speaking? It probably depends upon the bean. Any variety with caffeine is almost always a net dehydrator, though.
@hchavers @jsfs Myth. You adapt to the coffee within a few days.

@hchavers @jsfs @Salanth @unksol Well that information just pisses me off.
@hchavers @jsfs @phendrick @Salanth that I can’t help with, probably should drink some water to offset
@hchavers @jsfs @phendrick @Salanth @unksol
Wise man once say: “Better to be pissed off than pissed on!”
@chienfou @hchavers @jsfs @phendrick @Salanth I mean. I’m not here to kink shame so
@chienfou @hchavers @jsfs @Salanth @unksol I believe that was the same wise man who said “Plumber who becomes pilot is certain to have nasty crack up”.
As a fursuiter, very yes.
@PooltoyWolf Does that make you a scaley?
@mcanavino I’m not a reptile, so no!
I have a bottle of water in all the main place I sit @home & work. That way I always within reach of a bottle of water. I just sipp a little here & a little there. Now I have got used to drinking it at room temp, so now if I go out I will ask for a cup of water with NO ICE.
@mycya4me Is this my wife’s alias?
@mycya4me Ick.
Give me ice water!
@hchavers Since I don’t know you & I am a Male… So NO I can’t a Wife!
@blaineg Ok you have have all the ICE as I don’t want any!
@mycya4me drinking ice cold water helps burn calories.
@duodec @mycya4me Dietary and metabolic calories are measured in thousands, water thermal calories not so much. One liter of water at 1C will cause the body to “burn” about 37 dietary calories bringing it up to body temp.

@werehatrack Maybe their goal was just to get in shape and not go to lose weight.
No. I’ve been limited to 1 liter a day of all liquids combined - coffee, booze, soup, etc. Water isn’t always first choice.
@ladyhawke001
Please tell us more. That is a strict restriction that sounds unhealthy to me.
@ladyhawke001 @yakkoTDI
CHF most likely.
@chienfou @ladyhawke001 @yakkoTDI there are medical issues that require you to restrict licquid input. Congestive heart failure is one.
https://medlineplus.gov/ency/patientinstructions/000112.htm
1 liter sounds very low but Im not a doctor.
Now if you are my friend in some sort of weight loss cult. And told me that… I might check on you.
We used the individual flavor mixes, like Crush or True Lemon, and added one to up to 50 ounces of water. The flavor remains strong and isn’t too watered down. I definitely prefer my water ice cold.
We were advised to drink half of our body weight in ounces of water.
Only when swimming.
@phendrick Just remember, not all of that is water.
@yakkoTDI

Thanks for the reminder.
While I was eating lunch, no less.
@phendrick You mean “drowning”?
/youtube once in a lifetime
@f00l I was going to watch this video, but I imagine it’s the same as it ever was.
@f00l @macromeh You will regret this as the days go by and you can’t remember which topic you fund this video in.

@Kyeh Great old song. Classic
I’m pretty fond of Marty Robbins’ version, also.
@Kyeh @phendrick
Im insanely fond of all respectable versions of that song. If Johnny Rotten covered it, I’d love it.
@f00l Okay, how about Joni and Willie?
@Kyeh excellent
I usually drink a lot of water, unless I am going someplace where I won’t knowingly be in the vicinity of restrooms.

@Tadlem43
And doctors have told me that you can get fluids from watery foods, like fruits and salads.
@Kyeh lol Yeah… I know. I do drink water based liquids, but I hate water.
@Tadlem43 I like flavored sparkling water like La Croix (or even plain) but it has to be icy cold.

Wish I had the skills or anything even 20% of that and skills
@f00l
Thanks. Having the correct tools and a willingness to try help a lot. I did a bunch of research and reading as well. Those are all about 20 years old now…
@chienfou @f00l @Kyeh @tinamarie1974 @unksol Simply awesome!
VAN MURALS! GROUND SQUIRRELS! SPIT CURLS! AWESOME!
@chienfou @f00l @Kyeh @tinamarie1974 @unksol Same here. I’d ditch the contractors and grab a saw and hammer!
@chienfou @f00l @Kyeh @Tadlem43 Very nice.
Migraines from dehydration are a regular thing for me. But I keep on living a life of chronic dehydration.
There’s lots of water in coffee and I drink a metric buttload of coffee every day.
Coffee in the morning, tap water rest of day with ice in it

Apparently not since I’m currently dealing with a kidney stone.
@cinoclav @Tadlem43 I’ve only had one break loose. TL;DR, but I will not let the same “standard of care” be visited upon me next time, if there is one.
@cinoclav @Tadlem43
@chienfou @cinoclav And I hope beyond hope that you never, ever do!!
Go on youtube and watch the videos of men who are hooked up to this machine that simulates period cramps. lol (I have to much time on my hands lol )
@chienfou @cinoclav @Tadlem43
Although my sister did say once, when pregnant (she has 3 kids), “I’ve changed my mind. Can I give it back?”.
@chienfou @cinoclav @Tadlem43 @werehatrack My sympathies to all with the kidney stones.
32 oz insulated water bottle. I drink from it whenever I’m thirsty or think to, and refill it with cold water when it’s empty.
