Do "anonymous" meh clicks count?
6So I usually come to meh.com in an un-logged-in state. I use anti-virus and anti-malware software (as many do) and it automatically clears cookies. Every time I try to click “meh” to a daily item, it want’s me to log in, which is a pita, even with password filling software, so I end up actually logging in about half the time. I’m wondering:

Do the “meh” clicks count if I don’t log in? Does logging in register the vote, or merely show me the results?

Why do you care if I log in?

ip adddresses are semi-persistent anyway so you have a pretty good chance of actually knowing who I am. Why do you rely on cookies and formal login procedures just to register and display votes?

Seriously, just change your website behavior so I don’t have to login unless I’m buying something.

Somebody (and who actually reads to point 6, anyway?) is going to say some or all of these questions are in a FAQ somewhere. I don’t care - I don’t feel like looking for it… I’m not going to spend time chasing down these 5? (6? 9 - if you count the question marks) questions. I will get scolded once or twice and then somebody else will just go ahead and answer the questions anyway. And then there will often be some interesting point or nuance discussed that would have justified the entire thread in the first place, so why did you bother bitching?

Not really. Multi-user environments like coffee shop, offices, dorms, etc. will have multiple users all from the same IP address.

With all that effort, you could just create your own Meh button on your own webpage and click to your heart’s content!

All the meh button counts for is your personal click record. I’m pretty sure they’re not counting on valuable insights coming from Meh clicks since so many people just try to get a streak. So you have to log in so that your click can be associated with your profile.
@djslack See, and the annoying thing is, for YEARS I only meh’d the truly awful deals and didn’t click it if I thought the deal was mostly worth it.
@kalma I think I only have single digit meh clicks for the same reason…
I just checked. 7 clicks in over 1800 days. It’s possible I have one of the longest anti-streaks going.
@djslack The meh button is just to get people to check the site every day. I don’t think they give a rat’s ass how many people click it.

If that were true, the week banishment for missing a day wouldn’t exist. If you want to encourage behavior, why take away the reward?

It is all personal preference. Click, don’t click. Log on, don’t log on. It doesn’t matter … meh!!

I’m not going to go and answer all of your questions point by point, because they are all related.
No, your clicks don’t count unless you are logged in. It is tied to you either by logging in when prompted after you click, or by already being logged in with a stored cookie/session.
That history of your votes/clicks is tied to your profile, and can be used for a ton of stuff for analytics, site optimization, advertising etc.
It doesn’t matter if your IP rarely changes because tons of people have a dynamic IP and theirs does, and also several people can use the same public IP but have separate opinions or click habits. Like for example, employees at a business, or members of a household.
By tying it to your account instead of an IP, you avoid the complaint of “why does this show as clicked/voted etc”, because somebody already clicked it at your work, or in your house, or on public wi-fi. If you were just to allow multiple votes to get around that issue, you open yourself up to people multi-voting and skewing the results.
Lastly, it allows your actions to persist between different devices and/or networks, for consistency and convenience. Just like all of the other websites, except for the ones that are shitty.
Meh might have some internal analytics of anonymous meh clicks, but it doesn’t count for your account unless you’re logged in.
Depending on what software you use, you might be able to set it to not clear cookies from meh (or give meh a special set of cookies). That may defeat the purpose of blocking cookies, but it could also be a feature of whatever software you use.
Saying an item is meh means nothing. They are all by definition meh. It’s not going to improve the products. I promise you that there’s been nothing worth buying in years.
How do you even read the forum if you’re not logged in with dark mode on?
I use to see the streak meh faces at the bottom of the page, but for the last couple months it’s been missing. Did meh break up with me or maybe I’m being punished?

@craigthom No, I have a strict policy of only using my work computer for internet shopping. Same computer, same browser, etc. etc.
