@phendrick it took me a second but I got what they meant. Weird poll question though cause who is going to dig up their VHS or YouTube that shit for fun. And timing… If Netflix has thrown up the movies maybe.
But since you dug it up for me I might watch it just cause.
It was so very nice of those world wide alien murders to honor a US only holiday by dying though
@macromeh Funny, YT keeps listing those RD clips for me also, though I think I’ve already watched just about all of them. Of course, they’re still funny the second or third time around, if I have the time.
@phendrick I’ve been a Dangerfield fan for some time. Once, about 20 years ago, I made a positive comment about him in a Usenet newsgroup (of all places!). I got a very nice email from his wife thanking me for my support. Struck me as kind of strange – I suppose it could have been spoofed, but the email checked out and it looked legit to me.
We watched it tonight…on VHS, for extra nostalgia purposes.
That movie is ultra-silly, but the speech is nice. It’s especially nice that the President explicitly says that henceforth July 4th will be a global holiday if they’re successful. <sigh>
…but the bit where Jeff Goldblum somehow syncs up to the alien “computer system” with his clunky laptop and somehow installs an instantaneously destructive virus is still one of the goofiest tech plot points I’ve ever seen.
…on the other hand, Will Smith has the funniest lines while he’s dragging an alien corpse through the desert.
…on the other hand, even in the mid-90’s, it was clear to far-sighted Hollywood screenwriters that the real peril America faces is independent, career-minded women.
@Eskieguy Well if you watched the clip, you’d know that the Fourth of July is no longer known as an American holiday, but as the day when the world declared IN ONE VOICE! WE WILL NOT GO QUIETLY INTO THE NIGHT! WE WILL NOT VANISH WITHOUT A FIGHT! WE’RE GOING TO LIVE ON! WE’RE GOING TO SURVIVE! TODAY, WE CELEBRATE, OUR INDEPENDENCE DAY!
@Eskieguy we got attacked by aliens. They wanted to EXTERMINATE. For some reason around the 4th of July. The US figured out how to drop their shields and led a world wide synchronized counter attack and won. Now we are all supposedly United to the next Alien attack. Basically a Thanos situation.
So a United world message not a nationalism message. Except it had no message. Just your typical world ending movie of the 90s. Don’t read shit into it.
Of course when we finally meet nice aliens it will be a little dicey.
