Back in the '70s, I did two whole-summer trips camping in my vehicles. One of those was a '67 VW Squareback that I converted to a one-man camper (all seats except the driver’s removed, extend the cargo deck up the passenger side with storage below, big cooler behind the driver’s seat, etc) and the other was a '67 VW Bus that I built my own camper conversion for.
Much fun was had.
I haven’t done anything similar in the decades since.
Sometimes I miss those vehicles, and those days. Mostly, I miss being that young.
@werehatrack Yeah. I’ve been explaining drinking alcohol to new friends who aren’t drinkers – nostalgia for what you were doing and who you were with when you had your first drinks (and what you’re doing now and who you’re with now) plays a significant part in continuing to indulge.
Nostalgia is one of the best (and worst) feelings humans can have.
(I myself am not a drinker, but I have stopped refusing ALL the attempts to get me to imbibe when my friends order round after round.)
I used to enjoy camping but none of the women in my life shared my enthusiasm (except for my youngest daughter, who is an avid hiker/camper). Mostly due to issues with the bathroom facilities (or lack thereof) I think.
Now, I live in a nice house in a forested rural area - comfortable bed, multiple bathrooms, well-provisioned kitchen, etc. And I can walk a couple hundred feet from my door and be in the woods. So I haven’t been on an actual camping trip for years.
Some of my favorite memories of time spent with the Mrs were on camping trips. It has been years since we did that… guess age and other responsibilities (like elder care for our parents) have taken their toll. I kinda miss those days.
We used to camp in a tent (we drove to the sites, usually National or State parks and did not hike in) and usually enjoyed it. It was less fun when it rained, as we were unable to keep the rain out of the tent, as they were not rain-resistant or rain-proof in the early 1970s. I still think I’d like to camp, but I have not gotten the equipment, so maybe I don’t want to!
@phendrick@TheCO2 yeah, tent camping was real camping until i got old enough to realize this old back cant handle sleeping on a blowup mattress on the ground anymore. Now we have a nice, big travel trailer. Lol! Which is easier with kids and dogs anyway.

Cam ping? Is that an automotive diagnostic term?

How you get the good spawn kills.

Camping fun?
Depends pretty much on the weather (and temperature).
And the attitudes of the local wildlife, esp. bears.
@phendrick I used to laugh at people that only camped in campers, but after spending a weekend in the heat and high humidity, I get it.

@jnicholson0619 @phendrick Yes, age has a lot to do with it, too. All my kids are adults.
Thanks to urban campers, the appeal has dulled. Tents are under lock and key at stores.
…for other people.
