@revoked For a speaker this size and price (I got the 2 for 20 of this same speaker without the charging base) I think it performs well. Volume is actually pretty decent. I turn it to max when I’m listening in the shower and I can still hear words and music. Glad I got 2 though because they die in like ~2 hours. This one with the charging base is probably better then my 2 combined.
@hems79 This is a review of a less featured BEM BT speaker: http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,2817,2426644,00.asp
Hopefully the sound quality on this one- likely more expensive because of the magna-dock-charging base would be at least as good.
The black one has way more reviews. One question (that I had) that was answered in one of the Q/A is that the base (which doubles as a wireless charging stand for the speaker) is also a battery pack with 1800mAh capacity.
Also there are certain configurations where this speaker can do stereo BT (as in, buy 2 and configure L/R), but not sure if this white one can do it (and even so, it seems like there are syncing issues)
@akumax The ones I got do not do stereo (which is why I bought two). I think that’s the Mojo 2 and this is the Mojo. The l/r switch is also not shown in the photos.
@bricklayer Many years ago, in the 1980s, stereo compact systems (complete systems, receiver+turntable built in on top plus separate speakers) might come with speakers that looked like there were two speakers in each box, but only one was active and the other was non powered or connected, it would move from the vacuum made in the speaker box by the other speaker. It was called “passive radiator”. Something to do with balancing out the sound. It kinda worked and made those speakers look cooler and like they had two speakers in the box instead of one.
I don’t think that’s what this is though.
@ojohn Passive radiator designs are still out there. Love my Clairaudients. Great alternative to a ported design, which I’ve never enjoyed.
And since they refer to the passive speaker as being ‘for incredible bass response’, that does seem to be what they’re talking about here, not passive/active with regard to amplification.
@bricklayer When you build an enclosure with an active speaker you have 3 (primary) options. 1)sealed enclosure 2) ported enclosure (basically a hole) 3)passive speaker/radiator (basically a fake speaker that moves back and forth to compensate for the air pressure changes caused by the active speaker). The sealed enclose will have the tightest response, but it will limit the efficiency of the speaker because the pressure builds in the cabinet when the speaker travels inward, while the pressure decreases in the cabinet on an outward excursion- hence you’ll lose some bass response and overall volume using this type. The ported enclosure will allow air to flow in and out to compensate for the excursions of the active speaker. This port is designed to be a certain size based on both the cabinet size and the speaker properties. This will allow the active speaker to move the most, providing the most volume, but sometimes sloppy bass. The passive radiator (speaker) is a sort of compromise between the sealed and the port enclosure. The passive driver will move opposite of the active drive based on the change of pressure within the cabinet, this will allow for better efficiency (higher volume), yet provide some resistance so that the bass isn’t so sloppy-but more bass than a sealed enclosure. There is no best solution, there are great (and shitty) speakers made with all 3 of these type enclosures. The properties of the active speaker, the properties, size and type enclosure and the purpose for what the speaker is being used for determine what design will work best. In this case, a small enclosure, small active speakers would require great excursion to be able provide any kind of (even lame) bass- so the passive radiator is what they use in this case to achieve that.
@bricklayer Since you received several genuinely good answers to your question, may we return to our regularly scheduled sarcasm? I’m starting to get the shakes. (I also hoped someone would make an obvious but pithy joke about passive-aggressive speakers).
I just wanted to thank those of you who emailed me about not giving up on the site yet. I have only been on about a few months but your letter’s hit me where the heart is. So you wonderful, intelligent, smart and loveable peeps are stuck with me for a while still. So as I curtsey as I leave the room. Merry Christmas to all and to all a good night. Man I think I am finally losing it sheesh…
DAMN! I bought the black ones you guys sold not too long ago that didn’t come with a power station! It only has about a 4 hour charge and the cord to charge it is super short. I would have loved to have this one instead so I wouldn’t have to charge it so often. If you are on the fence I suggest buying. These have a great sound quality and are pretty loud. The charging station makes it worth it.
“Boy, I sure could use some music while doing these dishes,” I thought to myself while doing these dishes. “I sure hope Meh sells a portable Bluetooth speaker soon so I can stop increasing the volume on my phone by putting it in a measuring cup like a chump.”
I picked up the “Not Mini” version of the Bēms back in October to see if I would use a BT speaker. Turns out I do, but unfortunately, the sound leaves a bit to be desired. Out of the box (and still after break in), it’s quite muddy. If I use my device to most EQ out the mid-low bass, it’s better, but still noticeable. I did a direct comparison by chaining with my wired JBL Micro II, and the latter was far more crisp for both instruments and vocals.
Yes, it’s nitpicky for a <$20 mono speaker working with a BT stream, but the difference is noticeable, so I’ll be keeping my eye out for a sale on a Clip 2. But today’s deal would be good for someone who highly values battery life.
@KDemo that is a problem they would love to have. For reference, the site whatthreewords.com divides the earth into 10 foot blocks and gives each block a unique combination of words. That’s ocean and everything.
@stilesja - I was actually thinking of w3w when I asked that question. Were you here when @pocketbrain suggested posting the w3w location suggested by our order phrases along with the Google image? A few of us did that for a while.
(whiny-distant-class returns no results)
Anyway, I’m a huge advocate for w3w, thanks for mentioning it.
@brhfl - I do! I had that in the back of my mind as well, great job finding it! I remembered it also when @snapster and @shawn’s idea for the automated images partially came to fruition with the /buy command.
The previous model cost $12, slightly smaller, had a smaller battery capacity, no base charger, no mic, and the power button was at the bottom. I guess this is worth the extra $6, but I must refrain.
If the album version of Two Tickets to Paradise is 4 minutes long and that gets me and a friend all the way to paradise, then you’re telling me this is only worth approximately 4.8 seconds of that song? Can I at least pick the 4.8 seconds? Cause if I buy this and get this I’m gonna be pissed.
@gak0090 I don’t have a small TV, and when streaming video games, I’d like to be able to have sound in both the game and the stream without being chained to my TV. MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN!
Please take no offense meh, but time and time again, your writers have proven themselves to be more “liberal arts” than “techie”, clearly demonstrating a lack of understanding of nuances of technology and product specifications.
This has led to confusion and disappointment on multiple occasions.
I’d suggest that you have techie people proof read your copy (more closely).
Pardon me but this looks like it is a little --bigger-- than the tennis ball, not smaller. Meh.
@ojohn I’m sure that tennis ball was photoshopped into the picture. Thus, we have no way of knowing the real size of this thing.
Costco was selling a 2-pack of these for $70 earlier this year, so the price is definitely good.
I have an earlier version of this speaker (sans charging base), and like the sound a LOT for the size of it.
So a + and a +, in my opinion.
/giphy Bem
@haydesigner how’s the volume and sound quality?

Bem there, done that.
I’m rather saddened today by the fact there’s no conversation in today’s email. Can it only be heard by listening through today’s bluetooth speaker?
hope I win the fuko lottery. then I’ll be able to put it in my brother’s stocking along with a note of that one emo phillips quote:
“a severed foot is the ultimate stocking stuffer”
these are absolutely useless for margaritas.

Untz Untz Untz! Slash Slash Slash!
So . . . kinda’ like an updated speaker dock?
@lichme that doesn’t look like it took a lot of effort… but it still took too much effort
I like speakers. I know several personally.
I bought two of these from Morningsave. They are nice for those of us too lazy to plug stuff in to charge it.
Too lazy to google. Will someone explain “passive speaker” to me? (No sarcasm, please.)
Oh suuuuure, @stevenbrooken doesn’t want any widdle piddle sarcasm to ruin his night…

A speaker the size of a match book do you have something for comparison and whats the wattage?
Actually, I kinda want a USB rechargeable nosehair trimmer now
@elipongo Be careful of what you wish for. That meh be a tempting two-fer Tuesday item.
Conducive-charging power bank base?
Is it conducive to conductive charging?
@PocketBrain Yes, it is likely to charge when placed on the conducive base.

@kykazaa Woot will be selling these for 4% off the retail price sooner or later.

@gak0090 But for that 4 minutes I get TWO tickets!
@ochawkeye then you would have to purchase 2 items. You think Meh would let you split the purchase? They’d charge you separate shipping on those also.
