I don’t know how much under the shop minimum I was with this. I started to ask about getting some uv reactive fluid done in the flask but didn’t because a) the artist snuck me in about 30 minutes before an appointment, she only had a spot because someone cancelled, and b) I thought it’s not really often I’m under a blacklight anymore, and even rarer I would be in a blacklight and not have my shirt on.

@djslack heh. I busted out my black light because I had forgotten one of my tattoos is partially reactive. It wasn’t intentional, it just happened to be the color he used… Now I’m tempted to add some reactive pigments to my space kitties tattoo. The stars would be cool.

@Barney @sammydog01 there’s a lot of different factors in play. Depends a lot on your artist and how detailed of a tattoo you want. Really tiny tattoos tend to blur after time. There’s a reason some tattoos have super heavy outlines.

Ankles are easy to hide, so are wrists with chunky/wide bracelets. You could always get your boob tattooed.

@Barney @RiotDemon @sammydog01 speaking of cataract surgery, did you know that when they remove the old lens, before they put in the new one you can see ultra Violet. Our eye’s lens is what blocks us from seeing UV.

Monet had a cataract removed in one eye, which is why a lot of his later paintings actually look blue-y to us. He painted them as he saw them with his ability to see UV light.

Both my tattoos are on my back bc I can cover them up with a shirt. Places like the back of the arm (that kind of sensitive skin) and bone are gonna hurt more than other areas but it does differ from person to person. Do a scratch test with a needle to see if it’s gonna be a sensitive spot. Get it on your ass cheek if you don’t want anybody to see it.

Never had a tattoo but one of my ankles is already badly scared from snapping a bone in it and shattering the fibia and required screws. Hard to mess up if you already have a damaged area.

I kind of like the inside if the wrist in theory cause then you can just give someone the hand but that’s right over tendons. That would probably hurt a lot

@Barney @sammydog01 @unksol I haven’t done my wrist yet but I can tell you that the outside of my ankle over the tendons hurt pretty good. Honestly, my whole calf was fairly painful. The back of it was worse than the side, except the ankle. The top of the calf below my knee was super tender. My upper arm by comparison was a breeze. It only got tender after I’d been there for hours. It was mostly tender on the edges of my deltoid. Don’t know why right there.

Don’t you need to do some after care when fresh? Do you just use hydrogen peroxide to clean them the first few weeks, or is something else more expensive involved. Is it weird for a man to get a tattoo on the side of his hip.

I never really seriously considered tattoo’s before, but something this silly and to get free IRKs, I might be getting more tempted.

I’ve always thought it would be fun, if I did get a tattoo to get one with a portion of the ink only visible with a blacklight.

As for tattoo aftercare, everyone will suggest something different. My latest tattoo I got a saniderm covering that I wore for a few days, then mild soaps. Then I used CeraVe lotion. It should be fragrance free. If you don’t get a dermal covering you usually go to something like aquaphor for the first day or two (ask your artist)

I would personally never get a big tattoo without the saniderm covering, but a small tattoo should be fine.

Under no circumstance should you ever clean your tattoo with hydrogen peroxide or anything like that. You basically barely touch it, keep it clean, and only slightly moist. You do not use saran wrap unless it’s only for a few minutes. DON’T PICK THE SCABS!

Also, the pain chart. Not everyone is the same. It’s a decent guideline.

If you look up watercolor tattoos, they don’t usually have too much black.

Yeah, it’s pretty obvious by the picture this isn’t my first time to visit the tattoo parlor. I have several and am usually walking around with the itch to get my next one. Just waiting for the inspiration for what, where, when and how. So I was only about half following this thread and only that much due to my interest in the tattoo topic when what hits me out of the blue? The broken erlenmeyer flask! BANG Right between the eyes! And now my tattoo itch has been scratched, at least for a while.

@Barney @booogerbrain I have spent a lot of my life in a lab so the flask was definitely the one I wanted. Did you buy the matching shirt? I can’t decide if it’s cool or redundant since the same design is on my ass.

Once in college I broke a soxhlet. I think that was the most expensive glassware I broke although I’m sure there were a few erlenmeyers along the way.

The glassware I usually abused was sample handling/introduction. Nebulizers for ICP and ICP/MS or cells for UV/VIS IR etc. I was a service representative doing installation and repair of analytical instruments.
If you’re referring to the black silkscreened flask on a black tee shirt then yes I have it. I don’t remember when but I got it.
The tattoo on my ass was from my time riding Submarines. We hit Hong Kong for a liberty call and I decided to commemorate the occasion with a tattoo. And since it was my first and I didn’t know how I would react and a bit of bad attitude I thought I would put it on my asscheek. That’s a whole other story for maybe another time.

@CaptAmehrican I totally understand what you’re getting at. Reputable shops are some of the cleanest places to be right now. My local shop is taking it serious with a bunch of rules. Appointments only, no friends hanging around, everyone wearing masks, etc. It’s not ideal, but, it is what it is.

@CaptAmehrican it’s relative. Places with large cities are swamped. Places with high populations are swamped. Places with idiots crowding bars and beaches and just being idiots because someone said it was ok are swamped. I would not be looking to go into any of that. Ever. But then I would never want to live in a city in the first place. Here it’s almost nothing. Obviously be proactive and I work from home so barely go out but I wouldn’t be concerned about covid over a tattoo.

But then I’ve never been into the local tattoo/piercing place up the street. Not really my thing. Last thing I would worry about was covid

@CaptAmehrican Counter-point: tattoo shops already had strict sanitation methodologies in place before the pandemic. It really isn’t a big deal for them to add a few more steps to what they already do. The tattoo artists/shops I follow on Instagram have all posted strict rules about no walk-ins/appointment only clients, must wear masks, must not bring friends, etc etc. A lot of shops have also been making + selling their own masks & sanitizer.

@OnionSoup there’s a ton of different things that could of gone wrong. The type of dye, your hair color, not mixing it with developer, time, prep… Just to name a few.

I know everyone is different but when I got my tattoo, it was a lot of black ink–it was sort of therapeutic? It stung a bit but once you get in a groove it’s oddly ok, at least it was for me.

@f00l it’s pretty tempting isn’t it. I haven’t yet, and probably won’t… but if I happen to be near a tattoo parlor and in a particularly silly mood before end of the month, I might just do it.

I think on thigh since I can hide it there (I can’t see short-shorts ever making a real come-back for men) and that looks like one of the less painful spots.

I’ve never had the desire to get a tattoo- but if I’m going to get one, it’s going to be for a silly reason like this.

Plus the added advantage if I get “meh” on my thigh: I can put an arrow next to it pointing towards…

Neither have I. I have seen my tastes change too much over the years to be want to be stuck with something years later. My kid has changed her mind enough times over the tattoos she does have and then tattooed over them and that has just been in a 10 year period. Not to mention there are enough work places that require tattoos to be covered and not all can be. And for the ones on a wrist the person would have to wear long sleeves to cover them even in zillion degree heat. I also have seen too many seniors with faded, droopy tattoos with wrinkles running through them… Really unattractive. Now a temporary tattoo - maybe. As a grade schooler we thought those were cool. But nothing permanent.

And there is recent research that in some people the tattoo ink migrates to lymph nodes. The safety of that is unknown at this point in time.

@Kidsandliz yeah. I’m glad I haven’t got one so far for same reason. My tastes constantly change. I have a hard time sticking with any interest. I tend to be obsessive about a hobby or topic and learn all I can about it for a few months, and then I completely lose interest.

Didn’t know that about ink in lymph nodes although would have thought with so many people having tattoos for so long any serious issues would be known about by now. Worth looking into before I do something like this on a whim though.

Of course likely all these risk are likely pretty small, but if you are the one who end up with the problem the (group level) odds don’t matter to you as you now are in that smaller group that has an issue. Unfortunately no way to know in advance which group you will be in.

@Kidsandliz interesting. Yeah, I had no idea the inks weren’t regulated and most had so many heavy metals. Sounds like some inks are probably perfectly safe (black from carbon) but others are questionable, and they are not required to list ingredients. (And even if they do often ingredients don’t match what is actually in the ink).

I tend to think it’s unlikely to be a problem for most people, especially getting a small one, but it does push me more towards “don’t get one” than I was.

@Kidsandliz @OnionSoup the best thing is to go to a reputable tattoo shop. They usually use ink brands that have been around a long time.

My ex had a lot of tattoos. No issue with MRI.

@OnionSoup @RiotDemon Glad your ex had no problems. It sounds like most won’t have any of these problems. And many people go through life never (fortunately) needing an MRI either.

The catch is that with statistics it is group level “odds” and at the individual level we either have the problem or we don’t. And we can’t tell in advance which group we will be in. I have been in the “wrong” group enough times (for example getting breast cancer on both sides happens in less than 10% of the cases, some research says less than 7% so I gambled I wouldn’t, made some irrevocable choices based on that gamble, and lost that gamble) that it makes me hesitant to take the chance (when it involves health) when it involves a choice about something that isn’t necessary (eg falls under the “want” category and not the “need” category).

Each to their own though. Not trying to tell people what to do or not do. My kid has tattoos. Multiple. I am though a firm believer in understanding the risks, pros and cons, etc. of doing something prior to leaping. That is the motivation for me making any post at all in this thread since I have no intention of ever getting a tattoo (and that includes breast reconstruction nipple tattoos), irk or no irk. To me the risks are preventable not to mention in many cases I don’t like how tattoos look, let alone when they have faded, stretched out, lines become blurred… Don’t want permanent art work on me, even if I like the looks of it (for example that cat example put above is really nice and whoever did that is a skilled artist), I’d rather have the art work on the wall. But again, that is just my choice. Others can make their own choices. Their bodies, their choices, their right. Not my business.

@Kidsandliz @RiotDemon well other than, don’t get one done in a tourist town, I wouldn’t know the best way to pick one for best safety. Places like Yelp and Google reviews would say if people enjoyed their tattoo, but I doubt they would give much insight on quality of ink used.

If I did get one, the place in mind would probably be the one near my house. It’s a clean nicely up kept looking place on a decent side of town. Now that doesn’t mean their inks are non metal based or aren’t a concoction of plutonium…

It looks reputable. I assume it’s reputable but I don’t really know. One thing that really wouldn’t matter would be the ability of the artist. If the tattoo ended up looking terrible or they misspelled meh, that would probably be more amusing than anything given the reason I was getting it.

@RiotDemon I went to the place that a friend recommended and they were super nice but required appointments by email with a particular artist. Then the guy called their sister site and they had an opening for a short tattoo. Everyone was really nice! The guy at the second shop made a joke about me being mistaken for a motorcycle gang member. I guess you don’t do tattoos unless you’re a people person.

It hurt a bit but only took a few minutes. I asked for gray and he said it would fade faster than black. That’s OK. He asked if the design had a special meaning. I’m a chemist sounded better than it’s a corporate logo so I went with that. It’s a twofer!

@sammydog01 most tattoo artists are pretty cool. My current one, I brought headphones just in case but we ended up shooting the shit the entire time, both sessions.

Yeah there are risks and people should do research to see if really worth it to them, but tattoos aren’t particularly rare these days. The topic they’re asking us to get may be unusual but the tattoo itself not so much.

I think I read that 50% of adults under 30 either have a tattoo or say they will likely get one. People are obviously taking the risk for other reasons. Is free stuff really all that worse a reason?

I’d say though, in these uncertain times no one should really be doing this for free stuff alone. It will take a long time to pay for itself and as much as I’d love meh to last forever… You never know (I think I read on an article regarding pasta drop that they already laid people off this year).

You better like the tattoo for the novelty and talking point it creates if you get one. Having meh tattooed on your body will certainly be a talking point with people that see it.

@Kidsandliz @OnionSoup @RiotDemon The final step in breast reconstruction after a mastectomy is getting a nipple tattoo. That’s what plastic surgeons recommend. And that’s in an area that might possible need an MRI later and in a place with possibly damaged lymph nodes. No way would they do that if it wasn’t safe. So yeah, once in a while stuff goes wrong. That’s life.

Regarding safety. It certainly does look like some inks are safer than others and it’s not always easy to tell, I would expect a plastic surgeon to know which inks are safest and not contain heavy metals and where to get them. It looks like natural pigments and safe pigments exist but they may not be as vibrant.

Granted a small “meh” tattoo probably won’t be putting much metal in your body anyway.

@OnionSoup @RiotDemon @sammydog01 That is correct - getting it done as part of the reconstruction although many opt out of that, as I have. But there are some other differences. For nipple tattooing they don’t use metallic ink (it’s the metallic part that is the problem in an MRI), nor do they use black ink (which is one of the ink colors that causes the most problems) when they do. When you add to it that the general market tattoo ink often doesn’t list what is in it or the list in inaccurate that makes it hard to avoid some kinds of ink if you wanted to.

There is only a limited universe of inks approved for medically licensed tattoo people to use. As a result we are really talking about 2 different situations. In the medical field they use vegetable based ink which isn’t as concentrated, the particles are smaller, and the tattoo loses color faster. Regular tattoo ink has larger particles and they are metal based. The colors are deeper and brighter and retained by the skin better than the vegetable based ones. Incidentally the FDA doesn’t regulate tattoo ink. So me finishing the reconstruction and someone getting a “regular” tattoo isn’t as comparable as one might think.

I might know a little about these persons’ circumstances not thru private communication on this site, but rather because those persons and I might have some social connections out in the real world. They don’t talk about this stuff or only lightly and rarely do so in public.

They don’t endlessly self-advertise their woes I know what I know because I know fam/friends.

They’re not trying to set the stage for the next fund-raiser from relative strangers down the road.

They don’t seem have an prepared, often spurious and indefensible, football-stadium-sized, sets of excuses and justifications just ready and waiting to go for any circumstance; all wrapped up pretty with a bow.

They work hard (as I suspect you do)

But they also don’t Whine Hard.
That’s your speciality.

And they work to better their lives however they can. And they are kind and thoughtful and generous and frugal. And non-braggy.

The rules of one person per artist, no groupies or friends hanging around, k95 mask for everyone involved, makes me think it would be as low risk as dentist visit.

Are state hasn’t passed those phases to open yet bc of how fast other states opened and their numbers skyrocketing up. Everything was put on hold and we kinda even went a step back down with bars. Apparently they classify tattoo places as non essential. We still don’t have a bunch of stuff that can open.

@JnKL @Star2236 Your godson is lucky he even has access to K95 masks as all the non-counterfeit ones, even foreign, are in really short supply. Even the non-counterfeit ones aren’t always to spec. There is a continually updated list put out by the gov that lists which ones pass and which ones don’t. A number of Chinese ones don’t. Daily Steals had, what I thought at first, were legit ones until I compared the packaging with the manufacturer’s site. Nope. Packaging lego is different. The rest of it is copied pretty really well though. Tried to post a review about that there and they won’t post that. None of the ones on that site passed. Some are as bad as cotton ones. Guess that is why they are being sold there as they can’t be sold for medical purposes.

I know that Howard Stern said he got one of these tattoos when he and Beth Ostrosky married. The marriage seems to be going strong, as far as the public knows. Hope the tattoo is also.

@f00l @Skylord123 not all tattoos on fingers fade as badly. Basically if a tattoo is on a place that moves a lot, they tend to fade way faster. Elbows, knees, sides of feet, etc. Not everyone is the same, and it depends on the artist as well… But it’s pretty universal that fingers don’t last.

I’ve seen ring tattoos where the top part is pretty visible, but the sides of the finger are gone.

Actually, I work with a girl who says her father might get her a tattoo gun so she can give him prison-style tattoos. Of course, I have psoriasis, so I probably shouldn’t get one from her if it happens, also it would break my mother’s heart and mean I couldn’t be buried in a Jewish cemetery.
