I have several Starbucks gift cards, since I don’t drink coffee,& everything they have seems to full of sugar, that’s useless, socks on the other hand are mostly invisible when worn, so they are a far more practical gift.
@Eskieguy I am picky about my socks they need to be warm and sweat wicking. Gift socks are horrible. Starbucks gift cards are great and very regiftable if you don’t like coffee. Cash is king and if must gift card go Amazon everyone can find something from Amazon

@djslack A normal cup of coffee is coffee with water poured over it, give or take. An Americano is an espresso that’s been diluted with more water. I’ve usually found that I like Americanos better, if I’m buying coffee from a coffee place.
I have a problem. I would much prefer receiving cash but for gifting…I don’t know. I’m thinking about mailing out Christmas cards and a little thank you letter for my tenants and the homeowners I work for.
I’ve decided on $10 for a good amount. But would it be tacky for me to mail out crisp $10 bills with my cards or would a $10 gift card seem more “gifty”?
@therealjrn I’m personally never opposed to cash. Maybe you can make it feel more like a gift if you mention something that it could be used for. Such as, I hope you can put this towards breakfast at your favorite place. Or coffee and donut at your favorite place.
@therealjrn that being said, if someone gives me cash I usually just do whatever I want with it. If someone gives me a gift card it does feel more like a gift when I’m spending it, because I’m usually forced to spend it at a specific place.
@RiotDemon Tulsa is a QuikTrip town. Most everybody it seems goes to QuikTrip for gas, coffee, drinks, whatever. Plus I was thinking they could regift a card for work exchanges or something…hm. They offer cards I think for $5 and up.

Cash bothers me, other than from grandparents or aunts/uncles, where it’s just… inside the card where it belongs, you know? Outside that particular familial context, it’s a little too direct of a transaction for comfort. It’s this naked, credit one account, debit the other, that ideally zeroes out – as much a symbol of exhaustion and pointless conformity as a token gesture toward the gift-giving tradition.
Unless the person receiving the cash has a use for it that the giver understands. In that case, that’s charity, which is great.
