Best part of working from home is sleeping late. Work starts at 9:00AM and I used to get up around 7:00AM to shower, have breakfast, get dressed and endure the long commute. Now I get up at 8:50AM to login and hope I don’t have issues with the VPN causing me to be late.
The day I put an ER in my living room will be the day I can start working from home… Not that I don’t feel like I’m already living at the hospital now!
I’ve been working from home since a year before the pandemic. I have no family no pets no nothing. I am at the ragged edge of what’s left of my sanity. Please for the love of God, send help
@Tadlem43@TheGreatNico you might be able to modify your lease. If you really wanted one. Assuming you don’t have a corporate landlord, an actual person you can talk to.
@TheGreatNico we have done pet threads before maybe we just set up a permanent pet thread and people randomly upload pics for the petless. We all have those “this annoying/cute asshole” moments every day. Just you know. Have some self control/don’t tell everyone about it so we aren’t “that guy”
But an ongoing thread full of pets to cheer people up doesn’t sound bad.
@ircon96 I meant more why “pajama bottoms” was a choice instead of “pajamas”. Not that I have either I have “house clothes”. But I’ve worked from home for 12 years at a real job and in meetings every day and we have never needed to turn on our webcams. Ever. So the whole weird pandemic we must be in zoom calls and see each other I don’t get. Its a weird kind of pretend to me.
Not that the other didn’t happen. Living alone. Sometimes. But it’s too cold to have your ass out
@unksol Yeah, it’s definitely the Zoom calls that make most people feel like they have to stay presentable from the waist up these days. I’m sure the control freaks at these companies that never allowed WFH before had something to do with the current Zoom trend. That, and/or they see all the TV shows, celebrities, etc, using it & figure it must be the thing to do…?
Anyway, amen to “too cold” since it’s currently 1 degree with a wind chill of -21 in these parts. I’m about to zip myself in a mummy-style sleeping bag & calling it a winter. See you in (late) spring, peace out!
@ladyhawke001 Pre-covid, I commuted 300 miles/week for work, and totaled ~16K/year. In 2021, I only put ~2400 miles on my car, total. One nice, refreshing glass of lemonade from all those lemons.
I’m an IT guy in a lab that is working on current issues. In 2020 I had all my planned leave revoked because we needed to move 60% of our staff offsite. My wife and kid lived away from me for 6 months because I didn’t want to bring home something funky from the lab. It pissed me off so much hearing people bitch about being stuck at home with their families. All I wanted to do was see mine. I get 7 weeks of leave every year and I ended up eating about 5… because science. In 2021 I only ate 3 because I spent two months in the ICU. Not covid related. But I learned how to walk again in October and have been in the office ever since. I am required to test twice a week and I’m not sure I really appreciate the levity in this poll. I’ve not been infected by COVID-19 but this virus has had a severe impact on my life and my family. Meh.
@capnjb I don’t think I got it as badly as you did, but I can commiserate a bit.
I’m an engineer working in embedded systems, and have to spend the vast majority of my time in the lab. The pandemic and school shut-downs didn’t mean any of my work deadlines changed. Fortunately, my wife is an analyst and could work remotely.
With the schools shut down and a kindergartner and third-grader, I had to devote my attention to helping with their school all day. Then my wife would finish her day and take the kids and I would immediately head in to work from around 1630 to 0030-0200.
Then get up at 0530 the next morning and do it again.
I got to spend a lot of time with my kids, but barely saw my wife and developed a lot of anger and bitterness-- not toward my wife, but toward lots of other people. I am now a pretty hateful person, and I wasn’t two years ago.
@capnjb@Limewater well. That clearly sucks. The poll is about work from home so it’s by default biased towards people who didn’t get totally screwed by the pandemic. Obviously kids complicate it even if you got to work from home.
I’d love to have a wife and kids and leave. But I will readily admit I’m lucky and the pandemic did not change my life much. Obviously it’s impacted everyone differently and some people don’t work well from home. Some are thrilled by it.
I sympathize/you guys obviously got a raw deal and a shitty couple years. People are just trying to look at the bright spots of the situation they are in. Hopefully it’s over soon and anything positive sticks and all the shitty parts go.
@capnjb@unksol You’re right.
And for perspective, if you want to see people who are REALLY been shat on during all of this, check out the nursing subreddit.

@capnjb@Limewater I am pretty sure bitching is allowed regardless. There are things to bitch about no matter what. Not saying you shouldn’t. Or it doesn’t suck. Everyone needs to vent. And have their pain acknowledged.
Just you know. Getting bitter is probably not great for your health.
Definitely a combination. Wearing shorts instead of dress trousers and shoes. My own toilet. The convenience of having all my stuff in the kitchen when I stand up. Not having the distraction and annoyance of other people and the noises they make.
I’m semi-retired (I have a microbusiness that was home-based to begin with, but the plague nearly killed it), so I was WFH to a significant extent before. That actually doesn’t work all that well for me; the pitfalls of “be your own boss” often include “completely lose control over your personal life because The Business Eats You”. But my S.O. used to have a long commute, and his driver’s license is restricted; no freeways, max speed 45mph. So the commute was brutal, on the one day per week that he had to be in the office. (The other four were WFH already.) What we discovered was that with the commute out of the picture, it became actually necessary to build him an office here, so now he “commutes” to the end of the stockroom, where there’s a desk and a watercooler and a backdrop screen, and it looks like he’s At Work during the many Teams meetings during the day. And without the cats pestering him, he gets more done.

@heartny Your call to IT should excuse your lateness.

@TheGreatNico Send help, as in more beer?
@TheGreatNico Get a pet! The shelters of full of fur babies that need a loving home.
@Tadlem43 @TheGreatNico yes a cat will be more than happy to push you over the edge
@unksol
@Tadlem43 my lease says no pets unfortunately, otherwise I’d have a cat to help with the mice my neighbors seem to be breeding commercially
@hchavers too much booze. Need to dry out
@Tadlem43 @TheGreatNico @unksol I vote for cat as well.
@Tadlem43 @TheGreatNico you might be able to modify your lease. If you really wanted one. Assuming you don’t have a corporate landlord, an actual person you can talk to.
Maybe you are allowed a fish? Lol
@Tadlem43 @TheGreatNico in the mean time it you just want to see kitties there are a bunch of pics over here
https://meh.com/forum/topics/baby-kitten-day
The thread is done but cat pictures abound.

So many great things from the commute to my pajama lifestyle
Pretty sure Charlie is happy to have me around full time too
@tinamarie1974
Yep, he’s one lucky dog!
Not having to leave the house in this bleepity-bleep arctic tundra…?
Why bottoms?
@unksol I say, if going sans pants is good enough for Donald Duck & Winnie the Pooh, who needs 'em??
@ircon96 I meant more why “pajama bottoms” was a choice instead of “pajamas”. Not that I have either I have “house clothes”. Not constantly filling my 27gal gas tank; using the gas savings to buy mehables

@ladyhawke001 if you screw the cap back on after you fill up your tank, you may not have to keep filling it.
NO F*CKING MASKS
The commute has many blessings, and also a curse of an expanding waistline.

This really makes me feel bad for my bitching. I’m pretty sure I’d still be sick to my stomach even if I’d never posted anything.

@capnjb @Limewater @unksol
My first thought was “well that sux… you want to leave the wife and kids you don’t even have??”
Then the light went on…
All of the above! Plus avoiding the grossness (mold, brown recluses, smells, dirty bathrooms) of my office building
Definitely a combination. Wearing shorts instead of dress trousers and shoes. My own toilet. The convenience of having all my stuff in the kitchen when I stand up. Not having the distraction and annoyance of other people and the noises they make.
All of the above.
I came here to say that.
Being retired and Covid1984, I’ve been home going on year 3…
I’m semi-retired (I have a microbusiness that was home-based to begin with, but the plague nearly killed it), so I was WFH to a significant extent before. I wish I could, but I drive for a living.
