@Kyeh@therealjrn Ink for me. Online crosswords don’t give me same satisfaction as the paper ones do. I credit crosswords for being able to answer many "Jeopardy! " questions!
@Kyeh@llangley@therealjrn likewise! and also conversely, jeopardy has helped me be better at crosswords i also like the paper ones, but i use pencil. i have a special green wood leadholder i got that’s sort of crayon shaped, because holding a thin writing instrument hurts my hand. (repetitive stress injury from an old job.) with the thicker lead i also don’t puncture the paper which is why i don’t use pen - i press too hard! makes a hole or bleeds through.
@jerk_nugget@llangley@therealjrn Pencil, absolutely! I use a Pentel “Twist-Erase,” 0.7 lead, which has a nice cushy grip and lovely thick refillable eraser. And I stubbornly refuse to look anything up until I’m desperate. What I love is that you discover that somewhere way back in the far crevices of your brain things are stored that you have no conscious idea of knowing!
@jerk_nugget@llangley@therealjrn Do you like the ones that have a tricky theme or extra puzzle within the puzzle? I do, and I marvel at the diabolical cleverness of some of them. I also prefer the ones that rely more on punny ambiguous clues than on mere obscurity (“tributary in Sri Lanka” - stuff that pretty much requires most people to look them up. )
@Kyeh@llangley@therealjrn YES. absolutely. i love word games within the puzzle and figuring out the theme. i love having “a ha” moments that make me smile. they’re fun and they really make you use your brain, and even if you don’t know the answer you can usually work it out. i don’t like when i get a puzzle that has a lot of proper nouns (esp if they are intersecting) because that stuff is just either you know it or you don’t. you can’t figure out an actor from the 40s name if you’ve never heard of them, for instance.
i do hit google before i hit the answer key in the back on the ones i can’t answer - still flexes my brain a little and i’ll get to read more about something i didn’t know before and maybe retain that info for another time. the only thing i hate is when i google and the only answers/information is on other crossword sites. that’s lazy/cheap puzzle writing.
@jerk_nugget@llangley@therealjrn I agree completely. They shouldn’t intersect two proper nouns, grrr. I also dislike it when they use words that are a real stretch - something that is probably not wrong, but nobody would ever say it that way; I can’t think of a good example right now.
I tend to do my crosswords in bed to help me fall asleep - they’re the perfect distraction from real-world problems and worries without being online with the dreaded “blue light” to keep you awake.
@Kyeh same - i can’t think of a good example either (of course!) but a couple times i’ve been really stumped even after i knew the answer, because it was an archaic alternate spelling, or some phrase that no one would ever say in that way, etc. i’d much rather have a facepalm moment over that feeling of “huh?” when i look up an answer!
and yes i always do mine at night for the same reason. my brain needs time to unwind and a word puzzle is part of my routine before bed. (unlike my partner who just says “i’m tired i’m going to sleep” and then just…sleeps instantly. it’s a wonder to me, lol.) i was doing the blue ox games on my phone - i like them because there’s no time limit or score, no crazy backgrounds and whatnot, but it’s still on my phone, and the analog puzzle just works better at chilling me out
@jerk_nugget Okay, I found an example - clue: “Full of spirit?” Answer: “ENSOULED.” Ugh. Nobody says that!
Oh, those lucky instant sleepers - I used to be one, mostly - not anymore. My housemate can do that, but he’s a cat!
Puzzles! I love doing jigsaw puzzles and just recently started doing them online. Not sure if that version is a so called un plug… It’s the only way to go for me though since I can’t sit at the table these days. Couldn’t believe that I still get that satisfaction of popping in the found piece but I do and it’s awesome!
@hchavers If you can find it there was a miniseries made of The Martian Chronicles. I was only a kid but the book was one of my favorites and the series was great, I thought.
@f00l@hchavers That’s the one. I just read an IMDB review of it (where it only garnered 6.5 stars). Maybe I was viewing it through the lens of youth and a crappy CRT television. I loved the book, though. Like most of Bradbury’s work it was contained a really poignant warning.

@TomJRose I wish!! Once im my younger years, i accidentally grew it just by tossing seeds out my front door. Im in NJ. I live next door to a school so it scared me!! Now i flush them. My garden is ALL VEGGIES!!!
I just go around and unplug stuff.
@awk I appreciate your humor

Sailing
Gardening
Counting flowers on the wall. Playin’ solitaire till dawn with a deck of fifty-one. Smokin’ cigarettes and watchin’ Captain Kangaroo.
@sjk3 well now i guess i can’t tell you, you’ve nothin’ to do…
Make stuff with my hands.
@rustyh3 making sawdust with loud tools, and occasionally actually making something.
@Grumman well put and fairly accurate as well.
Board games with the kids.
Luigi’s Mansion!
listening to music and/or drinking bourbon.
Napping
Whittling.
Board games.
i usually binge watch something crime related. i know it’s kind of sick and counterintuitive but ¯_(ツ)_/¯
i also like doing crosswords and watching jeopardy (separately or simultaneously).
Sci-Fi movie, with quality required is inversely proportional to the action.
@hchavers If you can find it there was a miniseries made of The Martian Chronicles. I was only a kid but the book was one of my favorites and the series was great, I thought.
@hchavers @tweezak
Do I remember that this series starred Rock Hudson?

@hchavers PS: Mars Attacks
Reading, sewing, jigsaw puzzles, walks.
What @bayportbob said!!
Plus my “meh-dicine”
Painting and writing…they are both great when you want to get your mind off of your day and dive into a different world.
Cycling
Working on my, or anyone’s, car.
Fishing.
The balance of peacefulness with frustration make it the ultimate Zen experience.
assembling/painting miniatures.
Python scripting.
Get some mqtt going with some OpenCV, fun times.
And as a bonus, you don’t unplug.
Never unplug…
Any form of cardio then drinking…
sleeping because depression is the best hobby.
@majmaj Keep yer vitamin D levels up! I also like St. John’s Wort.
@therealjrn sounds like a plan. Now I have to look up St Johns Wort contraindications as they relate to bourbon and “meh-dicine”
Fishing when I can do so from the bank in nice weather.
Wrenching on the car
Hiking can be nice too.
Catharsis: taking the .22 to the range and trying to shoot the center out of the target, or cut strips of cardboard in half, or shoot battleship/spelling games on pre-made targets.
quilting!
Un-plug?
Music usually involves plugging in. Unless you’re playing guitar or something.
@katbyter Electric guitar requires plugging in…
Gardening & 420
@cristysue gardening to get to 420.
@TomJRose I wish!! Once im my younger years, i accidentally grew it just by tossing seeds out my front door. Im in NJ. I live next door to a school so it scared me!! Now i flush them. My garden is ALL VEGGIES!!!
Watch a movie with the whole family. No interruptions from phone notifications. Just enjoy the movie in our “home theater”.
Collecting electrical plugs, specifically ones in use at the time of collection.
@DennisG2014 came to basically say the same thing. It’s a sad, sarcastic place our brains live in…
Crochet! Doesn’t get nearly as much recognition as knitting, but it should.
I’m into reading, but that’s not an unplugged thing for me.
So walking hiking jogging and sleeping seem to be the things
Get high and shoot pool.
