@Tin_Foil These are the answer, especially when eating popcorn at the movies. Always keep them handy. I actually just bought some more since what I had was getting old and yucky. @Tin_Foil same. i use the disposable floss picks and usually just use the pick, but occasionally i have reason to use the flosser end between one or two pairs of teeth and…that’s the only time i floss which probably doesn’t even really count.
@blaineg No different than plastic or wood except there’s less chance of breaking. Plus these can be used for scraping. I primarily just use them to remove anything stuck, like the aforementioned popcorn.
@therealjrn And what the hell is up with all the pain involved with a bad tooth? OK, Ogg breaks his arm, it hurts, so he takes it easy and it probably heals. Ogg gets a bad tooth, it hurts like hell and it will never get better no matter how gently he treats it. No discernible evolutionary benefit to excruciating dental pain I guess, just a mean trick by nature.
@daveinwarsh@macromeh no, not toothpicks. I like the floss on the plastic ones. Maybe just floss, but then you lose the convenience of the handle like the plastic ones have. If there were a wood version of plackers, that’d be perfect. I’d even pay more for them.
A hygienist once said to me, in regards to brushing vs flossing: “Put your lunch on the dash of your car on a hot day. Take your car to the wash but leave the lunch inside. How long do you think you’ll want to keep that there?”
@LeviOhPlz That’s pretty much what turned me into an everyday flosser. I was flossing one night for the first time in probably a week and got a big chunk of food out, and I thought, I’m glad that’s not going to be in my mouth for a week. That made me think about all the other stuff that was hanging around in my mouth between flosses and got completely grossed out. Been flossing every day since.
@PlutoIsAPlanet I think it is not the plaque itself, but the bacteria that deposit the plaque. They can enter the bloodstream through abrasions of the gums and contribute to inflammation and arterial plaque build up. So yeah, another reason to maintain good dental hygiene.

Every 2-3 days for a few weeks after a dentist or periodontist appointment, until I get tired of doing it.
I’ve apparently been blessed(?) with very good teeth and gums. I know this because I completely stopped going to dentists for over 15 years and when I started going again about 3 years ago, all I needed was four amalgam fillings to be replaced and a deep cleaning (the kind with lidocaine to fully numb things, so it took two visits because she only wanted to numb one side at a time). I now see both a dentist and a periodontist, each twice a year so that I get a regular cleaning every three months.
My parents basically ignored dental care, just the occasional brushing. No flossing ever. Dad because he didn’t expect to live past 60 (his dad died at 57), and Mom because she thinks her mouth is too small and thus can’t floss, and hates dentists.
Dad had terrible teeth, and by the time he was 70 he had a ton of problems. He died last year at 77, and he kept saying, “well if I’d known I was gonna live this long…”
Mom’s teeth are still in amazing shape.
Me, I assume my teeth will split the difference between their two genes. I brush twice a day, floss once – and hope to live to be 1000.
