Generally some beef jerky, or something crazy from the Asian market like candy that has no English on it and a picture of a smiling nondescript critter. It’s a complete gamble. Sometimes it’s really good, other times it’s durian.
Foods that seem boring outside of a movie theater (i.e pretzels) take on a new level of excitement after being snuck past the vigilant teenage ticket tearers.
Raisinettes, popcorn and Coke was my favorite as a kid.
Nowadays… Our theater serves beer, wine, hamburgers, hot dogs, pizza and other stuff & they deliver to your recliner (yes, every chair electrically reclines and has a small table). I like their bratwurst and beer.
My husband insists whatever I sneak in can’t crinkle. Like nothing you buy at the counter crinkles. I usually take a sleeve of Oreos. Which I know crinkle, but I’ve gotten good at extracting the cookies with minimal crinkling. Or sometimes a baggie of M&Ms or something like that. The kids like sour stuff. So they get things like gummy worms.
As I chose the last option and am now obligated at gunpoint to answer, there was no all of the above option is why. I like popcorn, not so much candy but swedish fish sour patch are a favorite, or stuff off the taco bell $1 menu smuggled in which technically doubles as a full meal.
I haven’t been to the movies in probably 6-7 years now though.
@rtjhnstn … ew… bed bugs in milwaukee!!! thank god i only go to the outlier movie theaters in waukesha county then. ack… bed bugs! yukko! i’m starting to really hate being around people now more than ever.
Whatever the version of red licorice whips they sell, and use one of them as a straw for a “small” 7up/sprite/whatever. One time we snuck in two bags of leftovers from an family-style indian restaurant and our section smelled like tandoori and curry and the people behind us complained because they said it made them too hungry to watch the movie.
The only popcorn I can recall fondly or even look forward to was at The Red Vic in the upper Haight in SF in the 80’s. It introduced me to the joys of good popcorn and topping with brewers yeast along with real butter and garlic salt. And comfy couch seating as opposed to the crappy cramped seating in regular theatres…
My 29 yr old son mentioned he recently introduced his gf to the “crazy bay area” foodie foibles of yeast on popcorn during his last visit.
First live music/cafe/laundromat Brainwash in SF. I thought it was a great idea, but by then I was a new mom living and trapped in Oakland. Then a friend from FL told me about movie theaters that served booze and food. Oh, how I wished to be an unattached adult worthy to indulge in such things. Not only out of my budget, but out of reach.
Nowadays, I’m cultivating my geezerhood and avoiding crowds. With even more tech to help me stay separated from human interaction, I can please myself in my personal cave.
a bunch of years ago, a friend and i sneaked in a large pizza, and a six pack. we sat in the back, and i remember we knocked over a couple of empty bottles, and heard them roll all the way down…if i remember correctly, the movie was either “smokey bites the dust” or “corvette summer” so yeah…i just dated myself…
pretty much never buy anything at the theater. I always bring a few drinks, maybe some snacks. Every once in a while I bring in more. Most I ever brought in was a cheeseburger
I don’t eat at the theater. When I was a kid my dad would say that seeing a movie was treat enough and I guess I learned to go two hours without food.
Now that I am married my wife does not share that upbringing, so we get whatever she wants. And since it’s there, you know, I might as well eat some. Popcorn and diet coke usually.
@enville Yeah, I’m also in the “don’t eat in the theater camp.”
I’d rather just focus on the movie. I don’t get to go too often anymore, though, due to having young children.
I am also easily annoyed by other people in the theater. At least they’ve gotten better about telling people not to text during the movie, though.
I particularly avoid drinking anything during the movie. I usually intentionally avoid drinking anything if I’m going to a movie because I don’t want having to pee to be a distraction.
Tuesdays are “free 22 oz. popcorn with the purchase of a drink” days at the 2 closest movie theaters (as well as $5 ticket days). If I’m only watching 1 movie that day I’ll just get a small drink and the free popcorn, but if I’m going to watch a couple of movies I’ll get a large Icee (free refill between movies and then again after the 2nd movie is over) and the free popcorn.
I also smuggle in bottles of pop or tea, as well as various snacks including baby carrots.
I just bought a couple of boxes of Sweetarts at the Dollar tree to bring to my next movies.
Occasionally I’ll get popcorn. If I go with my mom, or if I’ve earned a reward. We have a popcorn machine at work so smelled it for years. Kind of lost its charm.
Since we usually go to a matinee, we grab lunch before we go to the theater. It is then easy to go 2 hours without buying anything from that expensive (and unhealthy) snack bar.
Back before we had the kiddo, we would go to the movies fairly often and would bring in wraps or burritos. We did this often enough that my “big purse” was dubbed “the burrito bag”. With the kiddo, who is now 9, we might smuggle in drinks and candy, but we are also pretty likely to just buy popcorn and drinks there.
I buy the refillable cups at the two closest movie chains, so a soda costs only $2.50 or $3.50. I used to get the refillable popcorn buckets as well, but no longer. If I feel like I’m going to want a snack I take some individually wrapped cheese or a snack baggie of Whisps, pickles or olives. But that’s pretty rare, usually it’s just the soda these days. One nice thing about the refillable cups is I can bring them in and fill them at the water fountain if I don’t want caffeine, and there’s no hassle of “outside drink”.
@unksol Tickets are $12, but every seat reclines & the place is very clean at our place. I’ll pay more $ for a few hours of comfort. Also, you can go online and reserve seating ahead of the movie.
We go to the movies maybe 3 or 4 times a year, so spending extra to enjoy some good food and a beer is worth it for us.
I chose the last answer because I felt like making a comment today.

@TheGreatNico grossss
Foods that seem boring outside of a movie theater (i.e pretzels) take on a new level of excitement after being snuck past the vigilant teenage ticket tearers.
@melonscoop I went to a weekday afternoon movie and the lady in front of me had a Starbucks cup. And they didn’t care.
@melonscoop @sammydog01 that starbucks cup, very large i’m sure, had booze in it.

@daveinwarsh Cinebarre?
@moonhat ‘Galaxy Uptown Luxury+ Theatre’ is their full name online.
They added a large IMAX in there also.
Junior Mints…which I sneak in.
@ebatch Yes. Have to sneak them in because our closest theater doesn’t have them. I have to make do with raisinettes.
@katbyter Sometimes I’ll take a bag of individually wrapped stuff but make sure to unwrap everything before the movie starts. I like it quiet too.
Popcorn, but I sneak in my drink.
@cinoclav Can or bottle?
@sammydog01 Bottle always. Usually Cherry Coke. I like to be able to close it up.
@cinoclav @sammydog01 No- guys. You need to use the can so it go “FFFFK You!!” as you open it in the theater.
Once a big container of esquites, another time a big bag of voodoo doughnuts. But it’s ok, cause we’ll still get the large popcorn and 2 large drinks.
Oh, also i may or may not have a flask of booze for my purchased drink.
A full meal, i.e. popcorn. Especially at the local theater that makes fresh popcorn with butter.
Reese’s Pieces I buy for $1 at Target, and a $10 hotdog I buy at the theater.
@Ignorant
Is that better than a $1(.50) hotdog from Costco and $10 Reese’s Pieces from the theater?
@Ignorant Always Reese’s Pieces.
I sneak whatever my neighbor is eating. Just wait until an action, love, or scary scene for the distraction.
A meal + beer or liquor… before the movie. No need for distractions during the movie.
I like to comment in the comments section when forced to comment about my poll selection.
Candy – whatever I sneak in – usually CHOCOLATE.
Movie popcorn is always quite meh … smells much better than it tastes – it’s the fake butter.
@phendrick Alamo uses real butter.
@moondrake @phendrick I just skip the fake butter. Wish we had an Alamo.
I like the kid’s pack- a little popcorn, a small drink, and fruit gummies. The size they call “small” is ridiculous.
@sammydog01
The XL is literally a seat next to a water-fountain-style soda dispenser.
Now who is going to edit that iconic gif of Michael and make him eat a salad?
@medz?

I choose the theater without bedbugs. Seriously, in Milwaukee, that is an issue!
Otherwise I sneak in whatever i can carry.
@rtjhnstn … ew… bed bugs in milwaukee!!! thank god i only go to the outlier movie theaters in waukesha county then. ack… bed bugs! yukko! i’m starting to really hate being around people now more than ever.

Cookie Dough Bites. Every now and then I’ll add a hot dog or popcorn.

@bullrocky PeeWee Herman dated himself at the movies once too.
@cinoclav Probably more than once.
Depends on which theater, and timing.
Sometimes it’s a sub or pizza. Sometimes it’s popcorn and/or candy. Other times, nothing.

I’m a candy girl but sometimes you just want some of that popcorn, the yellower the better. Gnome mean?
@moonhat When you get that one piece that’s just drenched in chemical butter. You know it’s horrible for you, but it’s oh so good.
@cinoclav oh yes, those are the best. That flavor as it squishes between your teeth, so good!!

@msklzannie Tuesday is half price popcorn day by me. I went almost every Tuesday when I had a MoviePass. I miss my MoviePass.
Full meal:
Buffalo chicken pizza
Chicken tenders
Curly fries
Multiple soda refills
Nachos with cheese sauce. Mostly for the hot cheese sauce.
Sno•Caps!!!
i don’t always eat popcorn, and when i don’t i choose junior mints…

@shaunanl I love the concept of a burrito bag.
Haven’t been to a movie theater in 20 years…
Sneak in Taco Bell, and an Arby’s large jamocha Shake

Why do you all need to eat shit at the theater. Just watch the damn movie. Movie costs $3 and the girlfriend will spend $20 on garbage.
@unksol Tickets are $12, but every seat reclines & the place is very clean at our place. I’ll pay more $ for a few hours of comfort. Also, you can go online and reserve seating ahead of the movie.

Pizza or a burger and fries. With a diet dr. Pepper.
