Years ago we had an eye exam benefit on our insurance policy. When I called to find out the closest provider it asked for me to put in my zip code. When the results came back it said:
(mechanical voice) The closest provider is Sears optical center O-PEL-ick-a Alabama.
Trouble is “Opelika” is pronounced Oh-pel-EYE-ka.
Yah-KEEM-uh for Yakima according to my Google maps.

@chienfou you’d think they’d recognize that, Opelika being the optical capital around those parts.
It will certainly help me remember the correct pronunciation.

My mother still uses the voice alert on her landline’s answering machine. It comes up with some funny stuff sometimes.

There is a street called W.T. Weaver after somebody’s name. A GPS I had wanted to call it West Tweaver.

I’ve heard computers pronounce ‘autopilot’ as “auto-pill-it”. Does that count?
