I’m not a fan of beef (or whatever meat) jerky, so I don’t know a good brand from a crap brand. I’m looking to buy some as a gift for college-age nephew. He is into healthy food (mostly), high protein, low sugar. I would like something better than what I can find at a typical gas station.
Got anything you could recommend?

These folks make great jerky. The Old Fashioned / Original is straightforward, good jerky; without a bunch of weirdness in it.

I’ve heard Wicked Cutz Premium Jerky is pretty good, but haven’t tried it myself.

Not really. It’s too expensive and quite chewy. Some if it can be oily and makes your fingers smell after handling it.

There is this brand of jerky called “Epic” it’s really good. It is also organic ingredients. Try googling epic jerky.
I have to agree with @SenorYEETZ , Epic is a GREAT brand. I don’t eat beef but they have some pork options as well as turkey–I get mine at Target. Krave is another one if you want some wild flavors.
@riskybryzness I like Krave and it is my go to jerky most of the time, that being said, they have more sugar than most and would not be a good option for someone looking for low sugar in particular.
If you have a local butcher shop, a lot of them have their own fresh made jerky. There was one back in WA that we absolutely loved. I should find out if there’s anything around here…
My favorites (fwiw) are Krave Black Cherry Barbeque Pork Jerky and Oberto Applewood Smoked Bacon Jerky. Not the healthiest jerky varieties, but for sure the tastiest.
Krave has come out with jerky bars, but I haven’t tried any yet. They may be more your nephew’s style.
Going the DIY route is good too. It’s shockingly easy and rewards laziness in technique at almost every step of the process. Also the best rout if you’re getting it for yourself or gifting it to someone who is conscientious about what goes into their food (low preservatives, dietary considerations, etc.). Heck; give me $20 and an afternoon and I make some for you.
Instead of jerky, and short of giving him his own dehydrator with a recipe book, basic pack of spices, a decently sharp knife and cutting board–which really IS an excellent idea, look around for biltong instead of jerky. Much less sugar is used when making it. Stryve makes decent biltong and is generally less expensive. It’s low carb, low fat, soy free. The 'zon borg sells it, prime delivery, the big original flavor 12oz. bag for under $18.
Picked this up from Publix and was surprised at how good it was. I may never eat BEEF jerky again.
