My experience with Apple Pay is it makes it easier to purchase from websites I don’t make regular purchases from. For the mediocre websites, I already have my shipping and credit card information saved so it’s actually more work to use Apple Pay
As long as stores keep accepting regular credit cards and debit cards for payment, I see no reason to use fancy payment methods like Apple Pay as that just increases the merchants complexities for no merchant benefits.
If you’re going to tell me that Apple Pay protects you more than your credit card company, then I don’t believe it. You’re not responsible if someone makes unauthorized charges on your MasterCard or Visa either. Even if you were grossly negligent such as you lost your card and didn’t report it to your credit card company, the most you’d be responsible for is $50.
I do use Samsung Pay because I still get to keep the points and other benefits of the regular plastic card while also racking up Samsung points that can be redeemed for Samsung merchandise. Works at most retail stores with a swipe machine without them needing to modify their system. I love it when the merchant starts yelling at me that they don’t take that kind of payment and then the shock on their face when it works. Doesn’t work on those machines where you insert the whole card and then take it out like at at gas stations. I don’t get mad at the gas station because they don’t support it and I don’t get mad at online merchants because they don’t either. In those cases, I use my regular plastic and move along with my life.
@cengland0 As far as I vaguely recollect, Apple Pay uses more one-time codes with individual transactions, which does improve security. Don’t quote me on that though. Can’t be bothered looking it up.
Mainly it’s a convenient checkout system, if we’re talking about the button on web pages.
If it is an individual number for each transaction, then how does that work for subscription services such as VMP and meh membership? Seems companies use the initial authorization for subscriptions all the time.
I have made 175 purchases on this site without entering my credit card information after my first purchase. Nothing is more convenient than just pressing “buy it.” I doubt Apple Pay is more convenient than that.
Referring convenience, it’s so convenient knowing my credit card is accepted everywhere and not having to ask merchants every time if they accept fancy payment methods just for the sake of appearing to be “hip.”
@cengland0@InnocuousFarmer a token would be issued one time to be used for the reoccurring payment and a notification would be sent to the phone each month when the payment goes through.
@Ignorant@InnocuousFarmer I have an alert capability on my plastic MasterCard (without Apple Pay) but I dont want to know about every single transaction as my email box would fill up quickly. I have it set to only notify me of transactions over $500.
I stand by my statement that there is no benefit for the merchant to support Apple Pay other than to make Apple fanboys wet their pants. Those people with Apple Pay do have a credit card behind that payment and can use that information to make a secured https purchase like the other 99.99999999% of the populaion that doesnt have Apple Pay.
@cengland0@InnocuousFarmer benefit for the merchant is easier onboarding as the user wouldn’t need to enter any billing or shipping information.
Benefit for the user is they don’t need to worry about a data breach from the merchant getting hacked.
But yes most of us are fine doing it the way it is, if Meh thinks there is enough of a benefit for them they would implement it.
@cengland0@Ignorant@InnocuousFarmer Apple Pay is definitely more secure, but I’m not terribly interested in that bit. I like it for the fact that I don’t have to create an account on sites where I don’t have one and don’t really want one. If I know I’m only going to buy from XYZ once, I don’t feel it needs to have my info on file and the opportunity to send me stuff. I also like it because I‘m able to see the total (with shipping and everything), not just the subtotal, without having to enter any of my information.
I want to know when they will start accepting bitcoin/euros/bartering.
"Pitney Bowes is supposed to be a franchise player, and you are talking about Apple pay. Apple pay. I mean, listen, we talkin’ about Apple pay.
Not a shipping thread, not a Pitney Bowes thread, but we talkin’ about Apple pay. Not the shipping thread that I go out there and die for, and ship every box like it’s my last. You know, the shipping.
We talking about Apple pay. I mean, how silly is that? We talkin’ about Apple pay. I know, I am supposed to be out there accepting all payment methods, and I am supposed to lead by example. I know that.
I’m not shoving it aside like it don’t mean anything. I know it is important. I do. I, honestly, do. But, we talkin’ about Apple pay.
What are we even talkin’ about? Apple pay? We talkin’ about Apple pay. We talkin’ about Apple pay.
WE AINT TALKIN’ ABOUT PITNEY BOWES. We talkin’ about Apple pay. Man, look, I hear you. It’s funny to me too. It’s strange. But we talkin’ about Apple Pay. We aren’t even talking about shipping. When it matters."
As in Meh would take apples as payment? I’ll show myself out
@canuk Hey I was selling something and got paid in chickens once. Actual real frozen rotisserie chickens.
I would advocate for it
I won’t advocate strongly for it, but I wouldn’t mind it.
I don’t use Apple Pay. Is that like Google Wallet?
@therealjrn
google wallet for dummies
sorry, teehee
if you do apple pay you gotta do goggle pay
Me, too.

@Ignorant @InnocuousFarmer
So nothing prevents the merchant from using that token to make unauthorized transactions just like any other merchant that has a credit card number.
@cengland0 @InnocuousFarmer that token may very well be locked to a certain amount and only from that vendor
¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Either way, you would be notified right away and since it’s tokenized they don’t need to shutdown your actual card.

Weird thing I saw in the Burger King app today. A special price for Apple Pay customers only.
Now that’s one benefit for customers.

I would love to have Apple Pay for all my stuff.

-Allen Iverson (probably)
@KNmeh7 I want to trade belly button lint for free shipping.
Meh is lucky, I frequently refuse to buy from stores if I dont see a PayPal option… Somehow I trusted meh enough to buy anyway.
@OnionSoup same here but all merchants must accept Dogecoin or I don’t shop there. Meh is the exception.
People who can afford Apple stuff are too rich to shop at meh.
@medz False!
