a Very Mediocre Promotion (ENDED)
53In an attempt to anger and depress those of you who have stuck with us the longest, we’ve put together an event that only VMPs can buy from. It’s essentially an extension of the Meh-rathon with a couple extra discounts and it’ll be up for a few days.
It has taken a lot of work and planning but I believe we’ve got the perfect balance here:
- VMPs will be disappointed in what we’re selling and annoyed that we’re considering this a benefit
- Members will be confused that they can’t buy, and frustrated they don’t get a special sale
- Non-members-of-any-kind will get mad that I don’t have a better description of their emotions here
Let me know how we did. I’d love to hear suggestions for future events and ideas that will dishearten as many of our community as possible.

I considered it my duty to order something, as a way to acknowledge this auspicious occasion, and also to use my pastadrop coupon.
Then I refreshed the page and saw that an IRK appeared for sale. Maybe it was there the first time, but I was fortunate enough not to have seen it. Anyway my luck apparently ran out when I refreshed the page, and I reflexively bought the IRK too.

Okay. For anyone that hasn’t found the super secret IRK yet, it might be harder than you think. Some hints that you’ve gotten from other VMPs might not work anymore. There are some available still, and I’ll help you out.
If you are nice.
Spread some good cheer. Call a family member or friend that might need a call today. Leave an anonymous or not so anonymous note letting a neighbor know that you love their decorations.
Something along those lines. Come back and tell me about it and I’ll give you a direct link if I think you were nice.
Don’t come back and complain when you get trash though, it’s an IRK after all.

Yesterday morning we made Thanksgiving cards & delivered them to the mailboxes of family & friends to brighten everyone’s Thanksgiving, since none of us could be together. It’s important to reach out to anyone who may feel isolated, pandemic or not.
@RiotDemon I had a lot of extra food due to a Bob Evans/Door Dash error so I offered neighbors extra goodies for Thanksgiving… as well as calling and giving Thanks for their friendship.

Aside from doing our part in this pandemic by staying home for Thanksgiving and ordering dinner from a local restaurant a few days in advance, we facetimed our families.
I also do fundraising for various charities throughout the year through video games. Our current one is Games2Give put on by Bungie (game dev). So far we have raised $350 for it in the past week.

@Ignorant Wow, I saw this Very Mediocre Promotion thread a few days ago, looked at the items, meant to buy some items and promptly forgot/got busy. Came across it again earlier and then saw the threads about there being hidden IRKs. Looked around and then scrolled down through this thread reading pretty much every comment and trying to figure out what in the world the secret to finding an IRK was. Then I got to the bottom here to find they are no longer available. Note to self for the future - start from the bottom up!
Here’s hoping I pay more attention if/when there is another event like this in the future so that I can be Regretful!

For lack of finding it, I’ve made breakfast for my roommate unexpectedly with instructions for him in the morning for reheating it, along with prepping his favorite tea and mug next to the hot water pot. He’s been stressed out trying to get work done before thanksgiving overlaps with his end of the month deadlines, and his morning starts really early, so hopefully that makes his morning a bit better. Figure even if that doesn’t net me an Irk, it’ll give him a bit of a more relaxing start to a slammed workday.

On the plus side, I spent an afternoon volunteering to hand out food at a food bank earlier in the pandemic. On the minus side, I’ll admit that I might have spent too much time schmoozing with other volunteers and not enough time actually loading trunks.

Well OK… yesterday I remembered to call an acquaintance who recently lost her mother. We knew each other in college (a long time ago) but barely keep in touch now. I know from experience the first year, and especially the first holiday season, is really difficult after the loss of a parent. So… we FaceTimed for over an hour, I think it was good. She smiled a few times
Today… well, my wife has been working her butt off trying to help keep the company she works for in business. Even last night she was working past midnight. So I got up early this morning and took care of the pets, let her sleep in a bit. Made breakfast for her, and then did all the cooking AND cleaning up for Thanksgiving dinner today (it’s just the two of us this year). And I made her favorite for dessert - Key Lime Pie. She seemed happy

My good deed - cause I can’t find it and don’t have a lot of time to look:
Yesterday while doing last minute prep for thanksgiving, I went into the grocery store for my wife to get some rosemary and sage, after checking two other stores that had none. I found the rosemary right away, and I grabbed it. I also saw a guy standing there standing at the herbs looking around frantically. I asked him what he was looking for, and he said “Rosemary and Thyme”. I showed him where the thyme was, and handed him the rosemary that I took, it was the last one. He asked me if I was sure, and I insisted. Then he told me to have a Happy Thanksgiving. It felt pretty good.
So today I will be on a mission to go get some Rosemary and Sage.

It’s cool. Family is doing t-day in small pods of people already “sharing air” nstead of the huge usual dinner I’m meeting someone for t-day shortly.
And I already got an irk. Mostly by accident. : )
My good deed: I bought some socks. It’s a small thing that can have a big impact for someone who is homeless. The kids always want to give to those asking for help at the intersections when we’re driving in the city so they can gift some socks in addition to the couple bucks we have in the change compartment.
I packed Covid-safe food to give to elderly neighbors. I don’t necessarily think it’s a good deed, because I would have done it anyway, and I’m positive it’s too late to get a link, but I’m still happy to share that I did. Happy thanksgiving!

Probably too late but I’m working on putting together a couple of shoebox gift boxes as requested by the local crisis pregnancy center. They want to have gifts that they can give to their clients (pregnant woman) who have older kids for those older kids. So I’m putting together a box for a boy and for a girl. Gotta wait until tomorrow to finish them though. The local used Lego store and build space is having buy-one-get-one free bulk boxes. So the Lego from one of those bulk boxes will go into the shoebox gifts. The lego from the other box will be all Technic pieces for the youth STEM/robotics team I coach which uses the Lego Mindstorm system. The kids have been asking for some more shorter beams, longer axles and a couple of different connectors I hope to be able to find. Plus we need more “mindcraft torch” pegs.

I called my mom multiple times this week to check with her. She had cataract surgery on her right eye last week and left eye this week. I texted with my sister on Thanksgiving, and thanked her for helping our mom out during this time. We planned in being together for Thanksgiving but living two states away made travel a bit complicated.

Suggestion: Never having Stroopwafels, I wish there weren’t so many available to buy at once. I would try a pack of 3, but 120 is too much of a gamble. Is there any way to bring the amount available down? I’d be down for aa promotion where it’s combined with another product (wine or other type of beverage?) or a “free pack” with every order. You could call it a bag of Stroopwafels or “BoS” and encourage people to order “like a bos[s]”.

They gave VMPs a pasta drop just a few months ago. And they have had 2 VMP only irks in the past month where you could actually log in, drink a cup of coffee, and still buy one. Or log in, go camping in the desert for three days, and still buy one.
As for the mailbag streams they had an entire month where the daily email had an intricate story woven around a customer email. And they were hilarious.

I have a regular laundry basket in the back of each of our cars (a vibe and a fit) that I keep clipped to the side with a carabiner to keep it from sliding around. Works wonderfully for my uses…

I was given a 18 pound turkey. I cooked it and took 3/4th’s of it to the animal shelter for the folks who had to work thanksgiving. Well and also the same with the gravy I made from the juices. (I let the assistant director know and so she brought potatoes and a veggie and a board member brought pie and paper plates/plastic silverware)
Since it was around 70 degrees eating it outside in the yard to also be socially distanced was easy.

We found out how much more money was needed and created two more funds for extra money overall. I dipped into my Corona forsaken savings and gave my daughter money and the past 2 days off (she works for me overseas) to cook for the families, watch/entertain kids, while my wife (family therapist) took free calls to convert stress energy into hope and helping others. This has been a crazy event, a miracle no one died and these victims have been so appreciative and the donors so generous.
