I had 34 face clicks and one irk (the first one) out of this. For a change only a check box instead of the usual stop lights and crosswalks (and then sold out message). And a lot of luck in the timing.
@therealjrn See the first irk thread. I mentioned it there. And a couple of other places when people were talking about them. And I told the bot nope I had proof I wasn’t a robot since I got one.
Was really nice this time not to have to do stop lights, etc. - especially since sometimes in the past I’d do the first set and then be given another set to do. Just like almost everyone else, any time I had to do that I’d lose out. Of course the odds of getting anything other than a really mediocre box is pretty high too. But hey at least I am getting one.
@therealjrn You must be thinking of someone else. I have only had one box arrive empty and open due to almost no tape. I’ve had two good boxes over the years - one a fuku and one a fuko and the rest have been the usual meh ones most of us get.
@Kidsandliz@therealjrn When I’m on my desktop, with Firefox browser, I never get those captcha pictures, just the checkbox. Today I was on my iPad or phone all day, and I always got the pictures (which killed me every time) - has anyone else noticed this?
@stolicat I’ve tried to figure out if there is any rhyme or reason too since sometimes I get them and sometimes I don’t.
I know that when my modem was turned off and everything re-set and thus my IP address changed (not a static one) I got them. Twice when I was logged into youtube at someone else’s suggestion I didn’t. I was logged in there this time too. Of course correlation does not mean causation.
I use safari on a mac. Never tried to get one on my phone though so I don’t know what would happen there. Someone else was discussing this on another thread today thought that you get them only if google hasn’t collected enough information about you. Who knows.
It seems to me that somehow if someone has ordered from here or is VMP, a member, past goat or kickstarter they should be exempt from them since meh knows we are humans, but then again maybe the captcha’s can’t be flagged like that.
@Kidsandliz I suspect it might have to do with a static IP address from the desktop (which it comes to recognize) as opposed to a mobile device which could be coming from anywhere. But I don’t know the details of these things …
@stolicat Except mine isn’t static as they aren’t with this provider - although I think maybe as long as my modem doesn’t reset it at least temporarily stays the same?
OK just did some googling - presuming what I found is true and I don’t know enough about this to judge - here are some potential reasons:
When an IRK comes up we all try to click as fast as possible so we are earlier in the que to get one and can finish as fast as possible before they sell out. One site says that if we click too fast we can be identified as a potential robot and that can trigger it.
Another site says that when a site suddenly gets an abnormal amount of traffic that can trigger it on sites that use google’s captcha because the site then thinks it is a bot attack. Seems to me if this is the reason then meh can turn that off for these.
Using a VPM proxy apparently can trigger it although that is not relevant in my case, as can clicking exactly in the center of something…
Of course then all these sites go on to hedge their bets and say that what triggers it is google’s secret so it can’t be consistently defeated. As a result all these those sites’ “educated” guesses.
Clearly meh isn’t going to turn that off for irks (as people have bitched long and hard and you would have thought they would have done that if they wanted to - well presuming they even can)… or mark those of us who are clearly not bots as safe (again presuming they can)…
Of course we could just blame @ybmuG… and give up…
@stolicat In the next set of comments below where articles are posted the wired one says (date unspecified at least that I can decipher) that pads and phones don’t have the one click enabled, there you are stuck with photos.
@Kidsandliz Thanks - all this is very informative, and I’m getting the gestalt of why things work the way they do. Looks like that wired article is from 2014 and the black hat one from 2016, so I’m assuming the info is dated but the concepts/approaches/limitations are still valid.
Hey @narfcake could you please swap out the photo the system picked for one of an IRK? I don’t know how to do that when you can’t just upload a photo. Thanks!!
@Kidsandliz for the future, after you post the topic, hit the edit button to change the photo. (If you are doing it from a phone, turn the phone sideways first or go into desktop mode.)
@RiotDemon Thanks. I saw the edit button but I didn’t see a way to upload a photo, rather it looked like I needed a url. I had been planning to take one of the irk bag photos, pull it from the deal, download it to my computer and then upload it since there was, oddly, a girl sticking out her tongue as the one the system chose. I couldn’t figure out how to do that. I guess I should have done a google search under images to find one of the bag there so I’d have a url.
I wish someone official from Meh would explain why captchas for some and not others, or sometimes and not other times. Honestly it’s a small thing but a bit frustrating.
@RiotDemon Although largely over my head I do know that blackhat (professional organization) members spend a lot of time trying to hack to help companies increase the security of their websites. I found their 9 cookies from that site interesting (although at the end they said they gave their study to google and facebook so likely that has changed a bit). I guess those of us with good meh click streaks would be less likely, all other things that trigger them being equal, to get anything other than a check box perhaps. Be interesting to run a quick study on that.
Google runs the CAPTCHA, right? Almost everyone has a Google account. I am not sure if the browser is essential, but I have twice avoided the pictures by having signed into my Google account while in Chrome. I don’t really want to test it out and fail, but I will try from Firefox without having my Google account signed in.
This shouldn’t be any different than an Android phone (signed into Google using Chrome) but I get pictures when I try from mine.
@KNmeh7 My android phone using chrome signed into google seems to trust me more as far as recaptchas go. I don’t usually get pictures to choose from. I do get pictures more often on a computer when using a chrome browser signed into google. It would be interesting to see what sort of algorithm it is using to determine if I’m likely a bot or not.
Not for me so I’m really irked
@AttyVette I’m irked too.
I had 34 face clicks and one irk (the first one) out of this. For a change only a check box instead of the usual stop lights and crosswalks (and then sold out message). And a lot of luck in the timing.
@Kidsandliz Oh you got an IRK? Funny you hadn’t mentioned it before.

@Kidsandliz Yes, we know, you have mentioned that. Over & over.
Your boxes get holes in them and all the good stuff falls out.
Enjoy your IRK KaL.
/Good night

@kirkslaw I’m not technically from meh but this article (.PDF) has a lot of interesting info.

Greetings, new robot friend. In time you will come to accept your robotic ways.
@kirkslaw Not really sure that is a meh thing. Usually they work based on IP address and if you have done one recently.
There is also a whole bunch of logic that could be there for how you view the page and if you are behaving like a bot.
https://www.wired.com/2014/12/google-one-click-recaptcha/
So they are watching how you move through the page too.
Beep beep boop boop. (I assume if you failed CAPTCHA you now understand Robot.)

My power went off so I missed having a chance.
