If these are truly 75% alcohol, as someone else posted, it will break down the lipid coat of the coronavirus and inactivate it. I don’t think it specifies if ethanol or isopropanol, but ethyl has a very slight edge over iso, but not enough to worry about, and most sanitizers that use alcohol uses ethyl, which is the same alcohol in beer, wine and spirits as well as gasoline with ethanol. The extreme minimum for either alcohol in any product to work is 60%, but that must be left on the surface longer. Always let alcohol evaporate on it’s own to be most effective. Don’t use a fan or blow on it, or wipe it. If using sanitizer on your hands, only rub hands together long enough to make sure it’s evenly spread after that, leave it evaporate on it’s own. Anywhere between 70% and 80% is good, better than 60% or 62% of some products, however 75% is the sweet spot for the most effectiveness. Alcohol needs some water to help it get inside the lipid coating of the virus, so don’t go above 80% or below 70% if you’re making your own solution, you will most likely be using iso. Any 91% or 99% alcohol will need to be diluted with purified or distilled water to 75% alcohol. You can also add a little 91% to 70% to bring it up to 75%. When you use your own containers or re-use a container, add a little bit (about 3% of total solution you will make) of regular store-bought 3% solution of hydrogen peroxide. Swish the H2O2 around and let it sit for a while, that will kill any stray bacteria spores in the container, alcohol will not kill them. Then add the alcohol and water, let sit 24 hours if you can. I make this and put in a spray bottle, or use and empty rubbing alcohol bottle, and put in a sprayer that fits. The stem of the sprayer may have to be cut to fit in the bottle. I use on surfaces that alcohol won’t discolor, and in a pinch can use on my hands, but for hands may want to add a little glycerin, so won’t dry out your hands, and take that into the % account. I don’t like the stickiness of glycerin or commercial hand sanitizer though. If you use straight, use a moisturizer afterward if your hands are sensitive to drying. Mine are not, I take it straight, just like my shots, LOL.
@Tadlem43 But the cost of the Everclear $$$$, unless you live in a cheap liquor state. The 190 proof (85%) Everclear is illegal in many states and can’t be sold, unless you distill your own. Can’t even find the 151 proof (75.5% - ideal) EC here in Ohio, but can find 151 rum if you want stuff smelling like rum. I’m sure iso is cheaper in many places, but can be hard to find, especially anything above 70%. You can try to find a chemical supply house online who sells 99% iso (I believe iso), may be $$$ as well as very hard to make in that % (alc. will always absorb water even when distilling and can never reach 100%, and 99% need to be diluted. Make sure any alc. is store cap tightly on properly for the same reason. @sammydog01 Always best to use the purest chemicals you can, including water. Tap water contains all kinds of minerals, as well as chlorine or chloramine as a disinfectant, and even low levels of bacteria. Boiled of filtered tap water would be better than straight out of the tap. Chlorine will combine with just about anything and can change it’s properties.
@danexton Come on, none of things will affect this. You’re spraying down a countertop not making an IV solution. If you have enough chlorine in your tap water to be dangerous you need to move.
I love that people are looking into the science and data on this stuff. It’s about time people find out the real numbers and don’t go with the click bait we get from the press. But you’re looking at things to be done by stores and restaurants. And those numbers? They’re trying to kill every thing in sight. And they picked nice round numbers because you need numbers. It doesn’t mean that 65% won’t work just fine for your shopping cart handle.
I’m not a doctor but I bet the liver damage caused by constant ethanol exposure (or isopropyl alcohol or any other alcohol) doesn’t balance with the value you get from disinfection. Or the CDC would tell you to do it which they don’t. Walmart is a nice ventilated place and your kitchen is probably not. I would be shocked if there aren’t people with lung damage from Lysol at the end of this.
We had mask discussions here early on with data about two or three ply and polyester and cotton and members were stating with certainty that one thing was the best. I looked at the testing they did to get that data and it was a guy with a leaf blower.
So I go with the CDC and wash my hands. And wear a mask. And use hand sanitizer if I don’t have soap and water. And I don’t overthink it.
A quick wipe will help tremendously, but it’s not a sure thing if you’re using these in a high risk environment and that’s a concern.
It’s not worth pinching pennies if the risk isn’t acceptable to you.
FYI, for Costco members, the Kirkland wipes have been coming in and out of stock from the online store ($18, shipping is included, or $0.06 ea.). If they do ever get a pallet in store, I’m sure they’re cheaper.

@Trinityscrew thank you for pointing this out! I almost got some because they are marginally cheaper than the ones I bought from Quill/Staples (both of which have free shipping, no minimum). Those are 6x8 which is a good size.
I use them to clean my hands, phone, keys, steering wheel, etc. They’re much better than most disinfecting wipes - they have a lower required dwell time, they’re cheaper, have no lingering smell, etc.
This is overkill, as the CV is almost always spread airborne, and only rarely by surface contact. And washing your hands or using a good gel sanitizer after shopping or errands is effective. As is wearing a mask, social distancing, NOT touching your face, wearing gloves & discarding them after shopping, etc. These small wipes might be helpful if you have a family member quarantining at home, but I can think of no other circumstance.
@MrNews It’s overkill, but for someone who’s at high risk and forced to work around others, it’s understandable. My dad’s at high risk (type 2 diabetes and breathing problems thanks to Agent Orange dumped on him in Vietnam) and works as a security guard, so he has to check trucks in and out at the gate with a clipboard. He’s really worried about COVID-19, and tells me he uses Lysol on his hands, the clipboard and the pen after every truck. I’ve told him that just soap & water would be fine, but he’s so worried that he goes overboard.
Frankly I’m okay with that, because I’d rather he do overkill than be lax and catch it and die.

Without identifying exactly what molecular type of alcohol is involved, and the other 30% ingredients, stay far away. These cheap imports can easily be harmful to your health.

The ‘Kill Time’ needs to be allowed to succeed, or you’re act’s vanity, ergo, is just fruitless & in vain. Since it Is dry, the ethanol won’t harm the chillin! BTW, the other reason you don’t need 75-100% alcohol is simply bwcause it would evaporate Too fast for rhinovirus, or coronavirus! Most bacteruum are not as hard to kill,. Those organisms can be fn done away with [,or clinically assassinated] in around 30, or so seconds. Of course, as is usual, there are a exceptions!! JSYK!!

@sammydog01 Always best to use the purest chemicals you can, including water. Tap water contains all kinds of minerals, as well as chlorine or chloramine as a disinfectant, and even low levels of bacteria. Boiled of filtered tap water would be better than straight out of the tap. Chlorine will combine with just about anything and can change it’s properties.

I love that people are looking into the science and data on this stuff. It’s about time people find out the real numbers and don’t go with the click bait we get from the press. But you’re looking at things to be done by stores and restaurants. And those numbers? They’re trying to kill every thing in sight. And they picked nice round numbers because you need numbers. I’m not a doctor but I bet the liver damage caused by constant ethanol exposure (or isopropyl alcohol or any other alcohol) doesn’t balance with the value you get from disinfection. Or the CDC would tell you to do it which they don’t. Walmart is a nice ventilated place and your kitchen is probably not. I would be shocked if there aren’t people with lung damage from Lysol at the end of this.
We had mask discussions here early on with data about two or three ply and polyester and cotton and members were stating with certainty that one thing was the best. I looked at the testing they did to get that data and it was a guy with a leaf blower.
So I go with the CDC and wash my hands. And wear a mask. And use hand sanitizer if I don’t have soap and water. And I don’t overthink it.

Not used as an antiseptic much any more. It did have some mercury content but was externally used. Burned more than alcohol when applied to cuts.

A quick wipe will help tremendously, but it’s not a sure thing if you’re using these in a high risk environment and that’s a concern.

I ALMOST bought these, but these things are SMALL - 6 in X 4 in. (24 Sq. inches)
As a point of comparison, the Costco wipes mentioned above are 8.2 in X 9.8 in (80.36 sq inches).
@Trinityscrew thank you for pointing this out! I almost got some because they are marginally cheaper than the ones I bought from Quill/Staples (both of which have free shipping, no minimum). Those are 6x8 which is a good size.
I use them to clean my hands, phone, keys, steering wheel, etc. They’re much better than most disinfecting wipes - they have a lower required dwell time, they’re cheaper, have no lingering smell, etc.
This is overkill, as the CV is almost always spread airborne, and only rarely by surface contact. And washing your hands or using a good gel sanitizer after shopping or errands is effective. As is wearing a mask, social distancing, NOT touching your face, wearing gloves & discarding them after shopping, etc. These small wipes might be helpful if you have a family member quarantining at home, but I can think of no other circumstance.
@MrNews It’s overkill, but for someone who’s at high risk and forced to work around others, it’s understandable. My dad’s at high risk (type 2 diabetes and breathing problems thanks to Agent Orange dumped on him in Vietnam) and works as a security guard, so he has to check trucks in and out at the gate with a clipboard. He’s really worried about COVID-19, and tells me he uses Lysol on his hands, the clipboard and the pen after every truck. I’ve told him that just soap & water would be fine, but he’s so worried that he goes overboard.
Frankly I’m okay with that, because I’d rather he do overkill than be lax and catch it and die.

Can someone confirm what kind of alcohol this is? The CDC has put out a warning of many sanitizers using methanol alcohol.
@eilatan99 Apparently a small number of stupid and or desperate people (15-ish) drank hand sanitizer with methanol alcohol in it. Some died.
Maybe they thought, “Methanol, ethanol, same difference!” Either way, here’s a tip. Don’t drink hand sanitizer or suck on moist towelettes regardless of the kind of alcohol it contains. You’ll be fine.

Without identifying exactly what molecular type of alcohol is involved, and the other 30% ingredients, stay far away. These cheap imports can easily be harmful to your health.
Only ethanol (ethyl alcohol) or isopropanol (isopropyl alcohol) are safe and effective (and there’s still that missing 30% of who knows what industrial waste that needs to be accounted for).
