@djslack So true! One of my favorite grocery store games is going to Jungle Jim’s (I’m blessed to live within easy driving distance) and picking up a half dozen random packs from the World of Ramen aisle to play some “ramen roulette” at home
@user09011156 i’ve only been to CAM a couple times. It’s a further drive and I don’t have other reasons to be out that way as often, but may have to give them another try again sooner than later. Of course that also means skipping out on the drinks and dinner show at Jim’s
If anyone is wondering if these are vegetarian or vegan: looks like “A-Sha Prince Katsu Noodle Soup (Hot n Spicy)” has shrimp powder. I don’t see anything non-v in the others, but I’m only quickly skimming the ingredients.
@eightyd Chicken has “natural flavors,” so that’s a question mark. But the noodles themselves all seem vegan! I was surprised not to see bonito, oyster or anchovy in any of these.
A-Sha makes the Momofuku noodles that are $15 for a 5-pack around here. I don’t know if these are the same as those, but assuming they’re at all similar, it seems like quite the bargain…
@2dStorySleestak hmmm… I already bought these and I’m not going to change that, but the momofuku ramen are the only premiumystery ramen I’ve bought and not loved. The noodles were good quality, the flavor was just so bland. Maybe it was a lame choice though (spicy soy).
@2dStorySleestak@djslack I just watched a taste test of ramen (to see if they included this brand) and they had the same conclusion! Maybe this speaks well of the noodle quality, though, and the flavors here might be more interesting. I haven’t tried the spicy soy, but did have another variety of Momofuku ramen that I liked ok. It wasn’t SUPER flavorful, but it wasn’t bland either, and I just dressed it up accordingly.
Here’s the taste test I mentioned (A-Sha is not included):
@djslack Interesting - I’m not sure I would describe the spicy soy ones as bland. They didn’t really resemble a high-quality noodle like some of the other Taiwanese ones I’ve tried. They could have used a scallion packet or some similar addition, and I think the sauce could have been a bit thicker (to stick to the noodles better). But I thought they were fairly spicy and flavorful, and I wouldn’t have any complaints if they were half the price or less. EDIT: just realized I’m thinking of the Tingly Chili noodles. I’m not as familiar with the Spicy Soy - I think I had them once and they weren’t particularly memorable as good or bad…
@2dStorySleestak@djslack@longtones Great video, going to have to try a couple of the recommended ones! and it was nice to see that the professionals feel the same way I do about Buldak - that flavor is much more important than spicy for the sake of spicy
Oookay, I’m usually able to resist, but you got me on this one. I love ramen and I’m a sucker for trying new things, especially inexpensively. I occasionally buy ramen anyway so might find a new favorite in here (and I very likely will enjoy all of them)…
My kids love instant noodles and the ones we buy are $1.80 a serving or so. Instant buy.
Like others have said, you don’t need to use the flavouring packets, spices, etc that come with the noodle if you don’t like it. You can throw in some veggies, an egg or two, random leftovers, some soy sauce/hot sauce/??? sauce, and it’ll be good. That way it has whatever you want in it.
@PooltoyWolf I keep going back and forth about buying these. My husband would probably like the spicy, but he has also told me not to buy bulk ramen from unknown companies in the past and expect him to eat it, lol.
@milstarr it may be a bit like a child that gets a brand new Mercedes for their 16th birthday without having spent their formative years driving something ranging between embarrassing and perfectly average but unremarkable. I suggest eating a package of Top Ramen before this arrives to get yourself a base level experience of your first months with a Suzuki Swift, and then properly enjoying your privilege
@pmarin Oh in my day it was tuna helper or plain pasta with generic tomato sauce. I was a “living on next to nothing” college student at one time. I was already married at the time. A big deal dinner for us was a tube of generic biscuits, some generic rice, and a tin of Dinty Moore beef stew. That was the high life right there! lol I open a can of Dinty Moore now and all I think of is it resembles dog food. I used to live for Saturday night Dinty Moore stew dinner with biscuits and rice. I mean 3 courses! Are you kidding me? That was living high on the hog in 1992 UF ville. Oh and even poorer coming up, if you can imagine that.
A-Sha is GOOD NOODLES! In for one tryin’ to convince m’self for another… but WHY are they a-cheatin’ me of two packs? 4x A-Sha Knife Cut Noodles (Spicy Fennel) 4x A-Sha Knife Cut Noodles (Sesame Oil Scallion)
Were it not for the various and sundry oils in the spice packets, these would last for years. The oils can go rancid and that is not something that is good for you.
@Kidsandliz
Yeah showme hasn’t been very co-operative lately. Not sure if it’s because it sees that as a trademark brand.
Hello Kitty has been around at least 30 years originally an icon from Japan. You could (and apparently still can) get Hello Kitty branded clothes, bags, etc. oh yeah the Tile brand of key-finders (Or whatever you want to use them for) just released a Hello Kitty limited edition and one combo set sold out almost immediately.
(The main trick is to make sure that the /showme is the very start of the message; you can edit in the rest of your message immediately after, as I’ve done here.)
(There are occasionally other problems with /showme and/or mediocrebot, too. The most common problem I’ve seen, though, is the message having non-/showme content. I have assumed that’s what went wrong with it today.)
@xobzoo Hmm I’ve had it work almost all the time if I hit return twice and then do a showme. I’ll have to remember your trick if it otherwise isn’t working.
@Kidsandliz Hmm… my knowledge may be old, or possibly tainted by superstition.
Realistically, it should be set up to trigger almost anywhere within the message (like /giphy and /youtube do), but the first edition of it was built simpler. I don’t actually know how much it was improved after that.
Whatever packets these have, remember you don’t have to use the entire packet when you make it. The szechuan pepper oil packets are pretty spicy and it hits very different than your normal chiles and hot peppers.
Funny thing about “natural” food flavorings is that they are often actually vegan. Because they’re cheaper than the real protein source, especially in asian foods.
Tempting… but wish there were pics of the package backs with instructions. How many sachets are in each variety? Are these basic one-packet of salty junk, or premium 3+ packets of base, veggies, oils, toppings, etc?
@troy I think @Turken means are these the type of ramen that just uses 1 seasoning packet (often overly salty) or the “fancier” type with multiple packets of sauce, dried veggies, etc.
@longtones@troy@Turken A quick scan of the ingredients for the knife cut noodles - spicy fennel flavor shows some ingredients multiple times (I saw “pepper, Sichuan pepper” listed twice anyway) plus it contains a sesame oil blend. So I’d be inclined to think it has multiple packets. Whether they all do or not – Hello Kitty Silly instant noodles? remains to be seen.
The Knife Cut varieties are 4-count vs. 5-count for the others. More premium perhaps, or just less overstock?
ETA: All I’ve looked at so far appear to have an oil packet anyway.
@Stumpy91@Turken that’s good because you can.
Also have you had a can of off-the-shelf highly processed Campbell’s soup lately? It will say like 700-800mg but the can is “about 2” servings and I bet for most people it’s one, so double that.
I do try to reduce my sodium too, so I’m careful how I use these. But I will use “good” salts in small amounts for my own cooking. Smoked sea salts, French fleur de sel, like that. Plus they cost so much you don’t want to throw in a lot anyway. And I don’t even like the taste when over-salty. I avoid a bunch of restaurants because of this.
Don’t know if it still works but one trick when you get fries at McDonalds was to ask for them with no salt and they had to make a fresh hot batch for you instead of the salted ones that have been sitting under the heat lamp for 20 minutes.
@DrunkCat well, AI guy, if that is your real name (Dr Strangelove reference) I’m not sure of evidence if water being wasted. For power plants, water is returned by warmer. Yes, that can create environmental issue.
For smaller system cooling towers I’m not sure about water usage but since you are a bot And do not sleep I would like a report on this by the morning.
I’m almost certain I’ve had at least some of these varieties before. I can’t remember if I got them at World Market or from Giant Eagle (PA, OH, WV, MD, IN grocery store chain), who has a pretty decent “International” section. If I’m remembering correctly these are pretty good & not the “colon blow” you’ll sometimes run across.
@larrybard Yeah that’s typical. Don’t need to use the whole seasoning packet. I often use about 1/2. Toss in some green onions or sliced mushrooms or bits of broccoli or zucchini or pretty much anything to make a “healthier” meal. Sometimes I use the extra seasoning later in my own cooking, or eventually they build up and sometimes have to just get rid of them.
I haven’t had these so can’t say, but the variety pack thing appeals to me.
@Snivles@troy Taiwan is a cool place. Like China, but not. Maybe some politics going on there?
President might make it 52nd state (after Canada). We need TSMC!. Why a country and world of many fabs decided to “Offshore” almost everything to one facility in Taiwan puzzles me (no it doesn’t… short-term corporate profits and top-exec bonuses).
I remember college days long ago with the 10 packs-for$1 Ramen. A Korean room-mate (not a cat) showed me the trick of cracking an egg in it. Of course back then you could 10(12) eggs for $1.
EDIT and a gallon of gas (not for the Ramen). I remember one of my usual places to stop for gas was an ARCO(are they still around) and it would be 0.70-0.90/gallon.
@bass1193@ciabelle yeah I guess you’re right it was Atlantic Richfield corporation (ironic, don’t you think, That it’s West by the Pacific?)
I usually drive a car that only needs charging in the West (Nice not checking gas pump prices, but ARCO was usually good). Or a Diesel truck and ARCO doesn’t sell that in most places.
Because it’s such a large part of Japanese culture, (and other cultures like Korean), instant noodles show up a lot on video (role-playing) games, often focused on, generally, high-school or college aged men, who seem to be addicted to these. In some cases another figure, generally a woman, adopts a caretaking role (since men apparently need it) jumps in at times to tell them to eat healthier “real” food and sometimes make it for them.
