I got these last time for a trip to Iceland - was rather perfect - compact but warm. I wouldn’t scale Everest with them, but for blocking the wind and holdin the heat they were great. Gloves were comically stretched on my monster paws, but they did the job.
@kdemo You could, at times, see a vague “swimming” in the air - but there are numerous things to consider:
we are approaching a “solar minimum” around 2020 - solar activity continues to decline as we head towards that
the area I was taken to still had a lot of “wash light” so the visible effect is diminished even further
NO ONE will ever “see” the lights like they appear in these photos - the camera is tuned a color scale a bit dissimilar to human vision
That said - if you go in the dark, and you’ve had a good 20 minutes to acclimate to it, and the solar activity is high, and the cloud cover is minimal, you will see some pretty amazing displays. More in the “blue / white” spectrum. And it was pretty amazing to see. Our driver stated that the display we saw that night was “the second best in the season” - so I was extremely fortunate. There are people that go multiple times and see nothing - it’s all very dependent on multiple conditions aligning. Our driver was among the most vocal as the lights were shimmering overhead - she was hooting like a school-girl. We stayed a good hour longer than “normal” - because she was enjoying it as much as anyone else. Probably the result of a lot of nights of disappointed tourists…
My recommendation if you’re taking a trip somewhere that has norther (or southern) lights - plan that part of your adventure first night, that way if you do have to do a “re-do” you have time in your trip to consider it. Reviews of some of the tour companies are brutal (worst being saying there were lights when there were none so they don’t have to give you a re-do pass). If you’ve got the shekels I’d HIGHLY recommend a local guide (but they are well aware of their value) - OR - and this is how I will do it “nest time” - if you’re renting a car just drive yourself.
For those interested - sweet spot for my cameras was ISO 1600, WB 4100k, and shutters between 5 and 8 seconds. Lens needs to be as wide as you can, pick the sweet-spot in the aperture but obvs the more light you can get in the better. And if it’s not clear a tripod or similar solid mount is required.
@Pufferfishy - They do occur sometimes here in WA, I’ve seen a faint green glow in the past. I keep track in the apps.
I was so dismayed when I learned that cameras are the main way to experience the lights, it felt like a grand conspiracy pulled on the public for so long. I guess the truth is that I was just uninformed.
Sounds like you’re an expert - you got some amazing shots! Thanks for the tips and the fun photos.
@kdemo Well if you have a location for a chance sighting where the ambient temp is higher than like 7 degrees it might be worth sitting out a few nights to see what you can see! And even though you won’t see exactly what the camera sees, you will see the same basic shapes, and seeing the good photos of what you “sort of saw” goes a long way in enhancing the overall experience.
We’ve actually seen them in NE Ohio for the last 2 summers. Really nothing more than a green smear - but still unusual.
I got these last time also (for $1 more!) - I keep them in the truck for cold mornings (it’s often still in the 40s in the morning and the fog is in). Gloves are great, hat is tight fitting but stretches, scarf is sorta meh
I got these in an earlier offer. Scarf thing is useless. Hat would probably be fine if youre a hat wearer (I am not). The gloves are great, though. They are definitely warm, theyre not at all bulky, and they work perfectly fine with touch screens
I got a set from a mystery box on MorningSave. They were more a kid’s size (they don’t quite fit in the “Men’s” mystery box category, or on my hands for that matter.)
@mellowirishgent@phonepole@turtle_2014 they’re referencing the infamous OJ Simpson murder trial and the even more infamous “if the glove doesn’t fit you must acquit” arrangement
@cinoclav I have no idea. I don’t see a tag on them anywhere. I guess they’re a small. They measure 6” from the top on the middle finger to the seam on the wrist
Got this last time for hubby & me. The hats were too small. The scarf works, but is shorter than expected. I liked the gloves, but they were too small for my spouse. Definitely a meh this time around.
Seems like I’m the minority here, but I bought these last time and felt like the gloves were pretty useless. The first cold morning (below freezing) that I wore them walking with my kids to their bus stop was miserable. It felt like the cold air just cut right through them and my fingers were numb by the time I got back home.
I bought two sets last time and used them on a business trip to Buffalo, NY in the winter. The scarf and gloves were awesome, the hat is snug and will give you bad hat hair so I save it for dirty hair days. Two more sets FTW.
I got these earlier. The hat is stupid, but the gloves and scarf are soft and cozy. I’ve been using them up until about a week ago.
Recommended!
Perfect for the cold Florida summer!!
Glove size: (measured from base of palm to the tip of the middle finger)
I always try and measure things with my middle finger too.

@Pufferfishy - Your photos? Brilliant!!!
Northern lights are my bucket list.
Question: were they as amazing to the naked eye as in the photos?

@Pufferfishy - Actually, there’s a lot of excitement for some sightings here tonight.

Yeah right, like I’m really gonna be able to remember where I put these in 6 months when it gets cold again.
Justin’s ‘finger’ is 6". Should he get regular or extra large?
@iPooOnUFirstMeh yes
@iPooOnUFirstMeh @Yoda_Daenerys I got these a few months ago. Sizes run small. Get the larger option
these are pretty nice, i got a few sets earlier…
got one in a ms bag. My sig other liked it. Ordered three. Wanted more red.
Yeah, fuck it. I will need gloves like this when it gets cold again. Or if I travel anywhere cold. Let’s go.

perfect for the kids who invariably leave home with 2 gloves in the morning and return with 1 in the afternoon.

I was hoping to get an image that reminded me of my warhammer days. success!

@togle you prolly just never figured out how the scarf hole works

/youtube look at this scarf hole
/8ball is a scarf hole real?
You may rely on it

@turtle_2014 White OJ
@mellowirishgent @turtle_2014 I must know…Did they acquit?
@mellowirishgent @phonepole Meaning…?
@mellowirishgent @phonepole @turtle_2014 they’re referencing the infamous OJ Simpson murder trial and the even more infamous “if the glove doesn’t fit you must acquit” arrangement
@Bandrik @mellowirishgent @phonepole Got it
@mellowirishgent @turtle_2014 So…somewhere there’s a black Kato?
@turtle_2014 But what size are those gloves?
@cinoclav @turtle_2014 when I ordered the men’s box I got the smaller of the two sizes. They barely fit my small hands.
@cinoclav I have no idea. I don’t see a tag on them anywhere. I guess they’re a small. They measure 6” from the top on the middle finger to the seam on the wrist
@turtle_2014 - Humblebrag?

Sweet! I was hoping these would come back. Worth it just for the gloves. Scarf ain’t bad. Beanie is pretty terrible looking, but it’s functional.

@PurplePawprints I agree. Hat worked well, but the gloves did not block the wind. I guess they’d be ok if there is no biting wind

HIKING! VIKINGS! STRIKE KING [BRAND FISHING LURES]! AWESOME!
I got these in the morningsave mystery box. They’re pretty decent all things considered. Can’t beat the price for what you get.
Mine came in. Gloves are comfy and work great with a smartphone. Good buy!

Wifey wants the red ones.

Can’t decide. Good cheap present for the gift drawer, or Meh. Gonna go with Meh.
Just saw that they’re touch screen friendly. Gonna buy a set after all.

Got these last time. The hat and gloves are good for winter running. The scarf is too bulky but the set is so cheap it doesn’t matter.
getting ready for next winter got 2 sets
@stuckigs Winter is coming.
Love the material, i got small and medium and pretty much didn’t fit anyone. lol
