Ok. Hear me out!! I have these and they are actually hot AF! Image they are around your bend and you are having “fun” with someone. Since they are sound activated, they pulse with ever noise that you make…. It’s like your own sex light show and it helps both follow along with the pulses or the lights and it’s magically delicious!! no cap!
@Num1Zero, did you mean, ‘imagine’, as in like, “Imagine there’s no country, it isn’t hard to do”¿? And, did you mean ‘crap’, instead of ‘cap’ as in, 'Bull S#*t type crap¿ I’m just saying!!
@1DisabledWarVet@Num1Zero no Exactly. We are not sex shaming. It’s probably just an infection not a disease. You can differentiate by the pulsing lights and some quick tests. Treatment as prevention.
Got some of these a couple weeks ago, only just now tried to install and find out they’re only controlled by a sketchy app that insists on having permission to access location data, and I can’t say I trust the associated privacy policy. Should’ve stuck to eBay for cheap LED lights, may see if Meh will give me a refund for these.
@captstack anything that uses Bluetooth will say it needs location since if can scan mac addresses (needs to do that to pair), it can figure out your location anyway. At least on Android. I don’t have an iPhone, so I’ve never looked into how they handle it
Only a 3.4 rating on the Android Play Store, with a lot of recent complaints for the latest version of the Happy Lighting App. I’ll pass unless anyone knows of a better compatible app to control these lights?
@mrkenneth@sammydog01 Gonna be a lot of confused people after they open the box. Though that does explain how it can be usb powered.
Or maybe if it works people won’t notice that it’s completely different than the pictures.
USB limits the power level enough to make me suspect these are only useful as accents in a not-brightly-lit space, and 16 colors tells me that some common RGB strip fade and change modes are not supported. I’ll probably pass unless I decide to use them as bike decor with a power bank.
@werehatrack and 5050 type strips are only addressable by the whole strip, too; color changes have to affect the entire thing at once. Whereas WS2812B/2811B strips (and similar) are individually addressable and can have a lot more complex effects. At the expense of a more powerful controller (though not necessarily a more expensive one - there are plenty for $8-15, and the best one is available from DrZzs for $28).
@datruandi@werehatrack the LEDs themselves use a standard commonly called Neopixel (by Adafruit) or just WS2811. For addressing the controllers, there are several options available. Some use Bluetooth, and that tends to be somewhat proprietary depending upon the app and controller selection (if it’s Chinese, they’re mostly cloned, but not always compatibly so). For WiFi, there are more defined options; a few somewhat proprietary apps, sorta like the WiFi LED bulbs, but anything based on WLED is compatible with any WLED controller app, and any WLED endpoint can be used for E1.31 Ethernet (or WiFi) light remote control for integration into more dynamic systems like for XLights or other animated Christmas light displays. It mostly depends upon the controller you get and how much work you want to put into it. The 5050s are great for “I want sticky LEDs that only do one thing but are also hard to screw up,” but most people who actually want color-changing LEDs will pretty quickly outgrow them. If you know your market, though, they have a place. (You can also just use a bunch of controllers and wiring… most SMD-style 5050 strips have a minimum strip size of three LEDs.) If you’re starting fresh and color changing and dancing LEDs sounds fun, WS2811/2812 is your go-to.
@jsfs@werehatrack can you wire up a different controller and would the pure LEDs then be a decent deal still or rather forget about it and get the real thing right away?
@datruandi@werehatrack if you snipped the strip, you could almost certainly wire in any SMD5050-compatible controller. There are a lot of those, and you’d probably get a bit more performance out of the LEDs than you did from the WiFi/USB-powered (or maybe Bluetooth? It’s not especially clear?) controllers they ship with (16 colors only? Really?). However… these strips here are really designed for going behind a TV or monitor and changing patterns or light intensity based on the sound received by the controller. You know those really fancy LEDs that sync with the monitor or TV content and change color accordingly? These are definitely not that, but it’s meant to be a poor person’s imitation. The strips are short and really only designed to do this one thing. You can do other things with them, but you’ll have to work at it a bit. If you are interested in doing anything really serious with LED animation, check out r/WLED and some of the related reading before buying, but I’d just go with the real thing. These are fine for behind a TV, or on a bike or something, but no 5050-based product is going to do anything all that interesting. There just isn’t any way to animate them except in large groups or fades, while the individually addressable types can do anything you can imagine.
@jsfs Since you certainly seem to know your shit about these - do you have a decent set that you would recommend? Something better than this offering but doesn’t require intensely deep knowledge to get all the right stuff so I can dip my toe into this?
Product Name: 2-Pack: Simplytech 15-Foot RGB LED Strips
Model#: ST-APP15-BK
Condition: New
Stick this strip behind your TV, entertainment system, computer, or decorate and set the ambiance of your indoor space
Switch between 16 LED colors, multiple light modes & brightness levels conveniently through your phone or tablet with the easy-to-use APP (Happy Lighting App)!
LED Lights dance to the beat of the music
The colors and mode change with the rhythm and melody
What I want to know is, does the app control them through Bluetooth directly, or am I opening up my network to the world through an unsecured endpoint in China like some of the really janky “smart cameras” do?
Easy to put up Christmas lights, not in time for Christmas. Classic Meh.

@1DisabledWarVet cap, crap, or clap. As long as you hang these, you won’t get an STD!!
@Num1Zero bed not bend!! Unless yours bends a little, cause it’s totally normal!
@Num1Zero I imagine you are around the bend, actually.
@1DisabledWarVet @Num1Zero I may or may not have snort laughed!
@1DisabledWarVet @Num1Zero no Exactly. We are not sex shaming. It’s probably just an infection not a disease. You can differentiate by the pulsing lights and some quick tests. Treatment as prevention.
@Num1Zero, i think sex with someone else [in your bend] is also involved in the ‘as long as’ protocol!!
LED Strips?!?!
I’ll buy a bunch and start an LED Strip club
@tweezak what an illuminating idea.

@Kerig3 alexa and Google compatible controllers are like eight bucks on Amazon. RBG strips are cheaper by the foot there as well.
For those who bought them last time, which product image did the actual item match?
@mrkenneth
@mrkenneth @sammydog01 so… none of them.
@sammydog01 @curtise So a bait and switch!
@curtise @mrkenneth Box is the same as Meh is showing- different item is in the box.
¯\_(ツ)_/¯

@nelscrn I wish I had bought those instead.
@sammydog01 I always do a google search on all the meh items to see if they’re a good price, good product, etc.

@Num1Zero… If they are as hot AF, and you have them around your bend, that must hurt like hell! Burn unit!
