@Pony Good to know & I’m in, too. A few months ago I nearly turned rabid when I found that the instructions for washing a new pair of pants were printed in letters that I simply couldn’t see. Sometimes I think that “OK Boomer” is too subtle for me.

@gertiestn Ooh yeah- the ones that get me are the products in small bottles with teensy print that I think nobody can read without a magnifying glass.

@tnhillbillygal A few years ago when I was just starting to have some minor inconveniences with close up vision, my ophthalmologist convinced me to get bifocals. He’s just a few years older than me and said that it takes a while to get used to them so it would be easier for me to adjust when I didn’t absolutely HAVE to have them for close up reading. I was going to need them soon anyway. And he was right. It did take me a while (like 4 months to be comfortable with them, closer to 6-8 to get to where my eyes automatically switched to the right position for what I needed to see). So I was glad I took his advice. Now, a few years later, I’m getting to where there are starting to be things I absolutely can not read without my glasses. And some of those are important things like instructions on medicine bottles. I have a few little lighted magnifying glasses and they’re lifesavers in those situations.

@stinks @tnhillbillygal Yes, they are progressives, but still bifocals (two different focal lengths).

@gt0163c @tnhillbillygal Well, they’re supposed to “progress” from one value to another rather than literally only support two strengths like a conventional bifocal. And see that YouTube… the coolness now is to CNC mill the inside of the lens to give you perfect vision from every angle. Allegedly.

The weird side corridors and blurred peripheral vision are a pita imo though. You have to point your head almost directly at what you want to see. It’s like you’re wearing horse blinders.

I’m a conventional bifocal fan, but boy you look old with ‘em on.

@stinks My last pair of glasses were traditional bifocals. When I was purchasing them they wanted me to upgrade to progressive. When I said no, they said I would look old. I told them I am old and glasses would not change it

@gt0163c @stinks @tnhillbillygal Exactly, it is incorrect to call Progressive lens, “bifocal”, they have many focal points.

Although many now are designed now to have three sort of, “sweet spots” - long distance, close up/fine print (like bifocals), and a medium/near distance for a few feet away (working at a computer monitor)

@st_ellis Solar lighters do exist! They use a similar principle, a concave reflector (mirror) that focuses the light from the sun onto a small point in front of the mirror.

@gio Thanks for the price comp. But it is worth at least $5 more to NOT have to go into the Walmart. Great prices. Mostly good values. But the store gives me the heebie jeebies after 5 minutes…
Interestingly the Walmart product info indicates it’s intended use is for “Camping”???

@gio @rustyh3 I haven’t been inside a Wal-Mart in years for this same reason. There’s always someone yelling at their kids, the workers are usually uninformed, nothing ever rings up for the right price, and everyone jusy looks miserable. No thank you. I’ll spend a few extra dollars and shop at Meijer.

@punkynpye I miss Meijer. Target and Walmart are not suitable replacements but those are as close as we get down here in DFW.

@gt0163c @punkynpye We lived near a new Meijer “Thrifty Acres” when the idea of a superstore was still novel (late 1970s). Loved shopping there! But sadly, there are no Meijers in the West.

@punkynpye @rustyh3 I have the option of six different Walmarts within half-hour of my rural location. I go to one of the furthest because it is a smaller store with better parking in a “nicer” neighborhood, so I sometimes forget that most people don’t have that option.

@jimeezlady The first ones I got only one worked. After thinking a battery change in the other would make it functioning I noticed the thin black wire was broken. I contacted Meh and they cheerfully replaced it for me. I use mine all the time. Gonna get more for stocking stuffers. (Yikes! Is Memorial Day too early to think about Christmas?)
