FoodSaver V3230 Vacuum Sealing System (Refurbished)

  • Sentence your food to a stretch in freshness prison
  • The comp link above points to an almost identical model, except for the design of the cutting lever and the copious Amazon reviews
  • Internal plastic roll storage and built-in cutter make sealing a snap, only you don’t actually snap anything, we’ll work on a better cliche for next time
  • Two sealing speeds: (Normal and Gentle) and two sealing settings (Moist and Dry) provide the customized sealing experience of your wildest fantasies
  • Or seal other things to protect them from the ravages of time: important papers, artisanal drugs, valuable yarn, etc.
  • Model: V3230 (we hereby propose “one letter plus four numbers” as the optimal formula for a model number)

Hop, Zip, & Clump

We thought we’d seen it all. Our previous vacuum-sealer events got a lot of attention from Reddit, which in turn led us into the wider, weirder world of vacuum-sealer Subreddits.

From /r/sousvide to /r/preppers, from /r/knitting to /r/comicbooks, it’s a kaleidoscopic underground of connoisseurs and cognoscenti, loosely connected but hermetically sealed together in their enthusiasm for encasing shit in plastic.

But there’s one we missed, somehow: r/Homebrewing. No, they don’t use the FoodSaver to seal beer up in plastic. We’re not sure how that would work, except that it wouldn’t work.

These suds-happy vac-o-philes are all about sealing up their hops. As user closeothtesilence put it, “Currently sitting on 22lbs of Galaxy in my freezer that I’ve refrained from opening. This gives me a reason!” At first this sounded like one of the sealer conversations in /r/marijuana. But it turns out that “Galaxy” isn’t that kind of crop: “Due to a post here a few months back I managed to strike a deal with the owner of Yakima Valley Hops that was too good to refuse. I have no idea what I’m going to do with them all but it will be delicious!”

More typical is FuzzeWuzze, who says “I use this every brew day, all my LHBS’s sell hops in 2oz packages and its rare that the recipe uses it all. Vacuum seal up the rest, add it to my inventory in BrewersFriend and into the freezer it goes.” LHBS isn’t a high school or something: it means “local home brew shop”, which is apparently a standard enough acronym that only outsiders like us have to Google it.

The point is, whether you’ve got 2 ounces or 22 pounds of spare hops lying around, they’ll hold on to much more of that crucial flavor if you seal them up in plastic with the FoodSaver. Which means, in addition to helping meal-preppers and doomsday preppers and diaper savers and comics nerds, this humble vacuum sealing kit is also helping make the world’s beer better. Is there any higher calling?
