Hey Jute

You could buy this tote because it’s handy for carrying your beach and picnic gear. Or because you find the cute inscriptions charming. Or you could buy it because you’ve always wanted to own something made out of jute.

What is jute, exactly? We all know jute leaves are a prominent feature on the national emblem of Bangladesh, of course:

But that’s where most of our knowledge stops. Jute is a natural fiber like cotton, harvested from the Corchorus olitorius plant, which looks like this:

“That’s what my bag is made out of? Jute got to be kidding me!”

Hahahaha. We kid. But the processing of jute fibers is no laughing matter. First the reeds are stripped of their leaves and left soaking underwater for several days — a process known as “retting”:

Looks like this jute is sitting by the dock of the bay like Otis Retting.

Hahahaha. We kid. But retting is no laughing matter. It loosens the fibers by letting microorganism gnaw away at the cells of the plant. At least, that’s what a quick scan of Wikipedia has led us to believe.

Once retting is complete, stripping begins. Hold on to your dollar bills, fellas — we’re not talking about that kind of stripping.

Hahahaha. We kid. But stripping is no laughing matter. Fibers are pulled from the stem and left out to dry:

Hope none of those neighbor kids steal our jute while it’s hanging out to dry!

Hahahaha. We’re not kidding. Jute theft is a serious crime in Bangladesh, where the bulk of the world’s jute is produced.

Then it’s off to the factories! Where jute is processed further into twine and woven into fabrics like burlap, hessian, and flirty beach totes.

We hope you enjoyed this Sunday’s little lesson in textiles. We hope to see you again next week. You know what they say — the more jute know …

Hahahaha. HAHAHAHAHA. HAHAHAHAHAHAAAAAAA. Ha. Hmmm.

Goodbye.
