Like a child’s cry that became goat’s bleat and trailed into the wheeze of a frightened stag, it echoed down the corridor. Joe bolted upright and hugged the wall, eyes wide. Irk peeked around the corner, saw nothing, and looked back at Joe. Loud enough to rise above the stormy ambiance, but still quiet enough to be a whisper, Irk asked, “Joe, what the hell is going on?”
“I couldn’t stop it, I should’ve stopped it,” he stammered, shaking his head. The strange noise skittered through the stale air and down the corridor again, making their hair stand on end.
Seeing nothing again, Irk darted across the intersection to the other side of Joe. “Stopped what?”
